The native Espresso Geranium (Geranium maculatum Espresso) [produces delicate pink blossoms above dense, nearly bronze foliage. This perennial plant is hardy in most U.S. growing zones (3 through 8) and supports native bees. It also attracts butterflies to your garden. Plant several together in a bed and enjoy the pollinator party. Their ability to thrive in part shade makes them a favorite of woodland slopes and shade or woodland gardens in zones 3 through 8.
The pretty pink flowers bloom from about mid-May through late June. Since Espresso Geranium grows to only about a foot high but nearly 2 feet around, its dense and low foliage also offers protection for small wildlife. The native (also called wild) geranium is known for its ability to spread without becoming invasive. The leaves have five deep lobes and are semi-evergreen, so the foliage can last into some of winter or hang on in milder climates.
Espresso Geranium Care
Wild geraniums like this Espresso hybrid are native to much of North America, preferring mostly woods, dappled meadows, and the edges of woodlands. They thrive in shade to part shade, so choose a spot that gets no more than about 6 hours of sun a day. They thrive in rich, slightly acidic soil, but can grow in many different soils and conditions. You should get best results by adding a good portion of compost or other organic matter to the planting hole
There is no need to deadhead your geranium, since it typically does not repeat bloom. They don’t always bloom in their first year after planting, but they might. Regular watering can help the plants bloom, and is essential during peak heat. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out before waiting again. If the soil lacks organic matter, add some slow-release fertilizer or top-dress with compost each spring.
Espresso Geranium Spacing
Espresso Geranium grows to about 15 inches high and nearly 2 feet wide. Be sure to space the plants at least 1 foot from woodland paths and 1.5 to 2 feet apart when grown in a mass planting.
