FYRE WING™ Amber Heuchera opens pure golden amber in spring, picks up copper highlights by early summer, and deepens to burnished copper-umber in fall. The shifting tones appear on deeply cut, lacy leaves that form a dense mound about 11 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Fine white flowers rise to roughly 14 inches in May and June. We love how the plant looks noticeably different from one season to the next because of the changing foliage tones.
Heuchera villosa ‘Amber’ is part of Terra Nova Nurseries’ Fyre Wing breeding program and represents one of the first reliably expressed amber forms of its unusual lace-leaf trait. Its full mounding habit works well in border edges, shaded entry beds, and containers where the changing tones can be viewed up close. The warm leaf colors pair especially well with green, blue-green, and dark foliage, making this selection useful for separating neighboring plants with similar shapes. The foliage is evergreen in milder winters and semi-evergreen in colder zones.
FYRE WING™ Amber Heuchera Care
Grow in full sun to part shade, giving plants afternoon shade in hotter climates and more direct sun if summers are cool. Plant in rich loamy soil with moderate drainage, keeping the crown level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. A slightly acidic pH around 5.8 to 6.2 is ideal.
Water deeply during the first growing season when the upper inch of soil begins to dry. Reduce watering frequency once the root system is established. Mature plants tolerate moderately dry intervals and may decline if excess moisture sits around the crown in cool weather. Leave healthy foliage in place through winter to protect the crown. Feed in spring with compost or a balanced slow-release fertilizer applied around the root zone.
Remove old or weather-damaged leaves in early spring just before new growth becomes active. Cut faded flower stalks near the base after bloom, and thin individual leaves during the season when they become damaged or discolored. Container-grown plants in colder zones benefit from winter shelter or insulation around the pot to limit repeated freezing of the root ball.
FYRE WING™ Amber Heuchera Spacing
Space plants about 14 to 16 inches apart on center to accommodate the mature 12-inch mound and allow air circulation around the crown. A 12- to 14-inch container is suitable for one plant, while mixed combinations are better in pots 16 inches wide or larger. Use a free-draining potting mix and check moisture regularly during warm weather, since containers can dry much faster than garden soil.
FYRE WING™ Amber Heuchera Companion Plants
Japanese forest grass is a strong landscape partner for partly shaded beds because its arching foliage provides a broader, flowing leaf shape beside Amber’s finely divided mound. Hydrangeas can form a taller backdrop in organically rich, well-drained soil, especially when protected from harsh afternoon sun. In containers, impatiens add steady seasonal flower color around the copper and amber foliage and share a preference for part shade and evenly moist, well-drained potting mix.
