FYRE WING™ Jet Heuchera has deeply cut black foliage with fine silver hairs that give the leaves a reflective finish as light moves across them. Short reddish flower stems reach roughly 10 inches and carry light pink blooms in late spring and early summer. The foliage stays densely packed, giving this small perennial substantial texture even when it is not flowering. Heuchera villosa ‘Jet’ forms a compact mound about 7 inches tall and 10 inches wide.
Jet is part of Terra Nova Nurseries’ FYRE WING™ series, developed from a rare mutation that ultimately produced deeply divided, lace-like leaves unlike conventional coral bells. It represents the first reliably expressed form of this lace-leaf trait in black foliage and combines that unusual morphology with a moderate growth rate and compact mounding habit. Hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, the plant tolerates summer heat well and retains foliage through winter in milder climates. Use Jet for dark edging, small foliage groups, shaded rock gardens, or mixed containers where its black-and-silver leaves can contrast with lighter surrounding plants.
FYRE WING™ Jet Heuchera Care
Grow FYRE WING™ Jet Heuchera in full sun to part shade, with afternoon shade useful in hotter climates and full sun more suitable if summers remain cool. Organic-rich, moderately well-drained soil is preferred, and the crown should sit at or slightly above the surrounding soil surface. A slightly acidic soil pH around 5.8 to 6.2 closely matches the breeder's recommended growing range.
Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry, keeping new plants consistently moist while roots expand into the surrounding bed. Established plants tolerate modest drying between waterings and generally perform better with slightly dry soil than with prolonged wet conditions. Apply a thin compost layer or a modest dose of balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring.
Remove weathered leaves in early spring just before fresh growth becomes active. Cut spent pink flower stems back to the crown after blooming, and remove individual damaged leaves whenever needed; avoid shearing the entire mound. Leave healthy foliage in place through winter, particularly in colder zones, because the leaves help shield the crown from drying winds and temperature swings. Container-grown plants can remain outdoors in milder climates, while pots in colder regions benefit from a sheltered winter location that limits repeated freezing around the roots.
FYRE WING™ Jet Heuchera Spacing
Space FYRE WING™ Jet Heuchera about 10 to 12 inches apart for a closely planted border, or 14 inches apart when each mound should keep a defined form. A 10- to 12-inch container with unobstructed drainage holes suits one young plant. Fill the pot with a freely draining organic potting mix.
FYRE WING™ Jet Heuchera Companion Plants
Jacob's ladder and sweetspire make compatible landscape companions in partial shade, adding lighter foliage and seasonal flowers around Jet. All three plants prefer organic soil and dependable drainage. Lobelia can fill the edge of a mixed container that receives filtered sun and regular moisture.
