The luminescent lime-green foliage of FYRE WING™ Heliodor Heuchera will immediately catch your attention. The deeply cut, frilled leaves emerge with a warm orange cast before maturing to clear chartreuse-green. Heuchera villosa ‘Heliodor’ forms a dense mound about 11 inches tall and 12 inches wide, sending up tiny white flowers on stems reaching about 15 inches in May and June. This is our favorite of the FYRE WING™ series because the foliage seems to glow even in a shaded planting.

Heliodor represents the first reliably expressed lime-green form of the Fyre Wing lace-leaf trait developed through Terra Nova Nurseries’ breeding program. Its moderate growth rate produces a full, rounded plant with finely divided foliage that gives traditional coral bells an entirely different texture. The leaves remain evergreen in milder climates and may become semi-evergreen at the lower end of its range (USDA zones 4 to 9). Place it along shaded paths, at the front of woodland borders, beneath open-canopied shrubs, or in containers where its pale foliage can separate deeper greens and darker-leaved plants.

FYRE WING™ Heliodor Heuchera Care

Grow in part shade to full shade, with morning light or filtered sun producing especially good foliage color and afternoon protection becoming more important in hot climates. Plant in organically rich, moderately well-drained soil, keeping the crown level with or slightly above the soil surface. A mildly acidic growing medium around pH 5.8 to 6.2 is well suited to its roots.

Water thoroughly through the first growing season whenever the upper inch of soil begins to dry. Allow established plants to dry moderately between waterings. Yellowing lower leaves can indicate excessive moisture, while crisp leaf margins can signal too much sun or prolonged dryness. Apply compost or a measured dose of balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring, keeping concentrated fertilizer away from the crown. In colder zones, leave healthy foliage through winter and place mulch around the root zone.

Cut away weathered leaves in early spring as fresh growth begins to appear from the center of the plant. Flower stalks can be removed near their base after blooming, and individual damaged leaves may be thinned throughout the season with clean pruners. Container-grown plants in colder climates benefit from a sheltered winter location or insulation around the pot to reduce repeated freezing and thawing of the root ball.

FYRE WING™ Heliodor Heuchera Spacing

Space plants approximately 14 to 16 inches apart on center to give the 12-inch mature mounds room to fill out and receive airflow around their crowns. A 12- to 14-inch container works for a single plant, while mixed combinations are better in pots at least 16 inches wide. Select a pot with unobstructed drainage and frost resistance.

FYRE WING™ Heliodor Heuchera Companion Plants

Astilbe makes a good perennial companion in moisture-retentive, well-drained shade, pairing upright flower plumes with Heliodor’s low, finely divided foliage. Pieris shrubs suit many of the same acidic, partly shaded sites and provide a taller evergreen layer behind the chartreuse mound. For containers, fuchsia can share a sheltered part-shade setting and contributes pendulous flowers above the foliage, provided the potting mix drains freely.
