FYRE WING™ Hematite Heuchera is an exciting introduction from Terra Nova Nurseries featuring deeply divided cordovan-red leaves tipped in copper. The intricate leaf shape is displayed from the crown outward, giving the foliage a remarkably fine, Japanese maple-like appearance. Botanically, Heuchera villosa ‘Hematite’ forms a low mound about 6 inches tall and 11 inches wide, with 10-inch flower stems carrying white to pale yellow blooms in May and June.

This selection is part of the FYRE WING™ lace-leaf series and represents one of the first reliably expressed red forms of the unusual cut-leaf trait. Years of crossing and selection produced foliage with much finer division than conventional coral bells but with the same sturdy growth habit of heuchera. It stays compact and is evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on winter conditions. Hematite works especially well along shaded walkways, near the front of mixed borders, beneath open-canopied shrubs, and as a foliage-focused container specimen.

FYRE WING™ Hematite Heuchera Care

Plant in full sun to part shade, favoring afternoon shade in regions with hot summers and stronger sun in cooler climates. Use organic, moderately well-drained soil that sheds excess water readily around the crown. A slightly acidic growing medium around pH 5.8 to 6.2 is well suited to this heuchera.

Water deeply during the first growing season whenever the upper inch of soil begins to dry, allowing roots to develop beyond the original planting hole. Once established, let the soil dry moderately between waterings and watch for persistently wet conditions around the crown, which can lead to decline. A light spring application of compost or balanced slow-release fertilizer is usually sufficient in garden soil. During winter, keep mulch around the root zone while leaving the crown exposed above the soil surface.

Remove winter-damaged or tired leaves in early spring just before new growth becomes active. Spent flower stalks can be cut down near the crown after flowering to keep the foliage mound tidy and may support additional flowering. Leave healthy foliage in place through fall, particularly in colder regions, since it helps shelter the crown. Move container-grown plants to a protected location during severe winter weather in the colder part of its zone 4 to 9 range.

FYRE WING™ Hematite Heuchera Spacing

Space plants about 12 to 14 inches apart on center so the mature 11-inch mounds can develop with some air movement between crowns. For a single specimen, use a container at least 10 to 12 inches wide, or step up to a 14- to 16-inch planter when combining it with companion plants. Containers need an unobstructed drainage hole, and the planting mix should be allowed to dry slightly near the surface before the next thorough watering.

FYRE WING™ Hematite Heuchera Companion Plants

Barrenwort makes a strong landscape companion because it provides a contrasting leaf shape and grows well in partly shaded woodland sites. Leucothoe can provide an evergreen shrub layer behind Hematite in acidic, well-drained soil. For mixed containers in part shade, wishbone flowers offer seasonal bloom around the darker foliage and appreciate rich, well-drained potting soil with regular watering.
