FYRE WING™ Spinel Heuchera introduces deeply cut, lace-like foliage in layered purple-bronze tones, giving coral bells an entirely different leaf form. Heuchera sanguinea ‘Spinel’ forms a dense mound about 7 inches tall and 14 inches wide, with fuzzy leaves carrying hints of red and silver that shift with temperature and light. Flowers are infrequent, keeping attention on the foliage, though occasional pale flower stems may reach about 12 inches in late spring. The intricate leaf shape is most noticeable along a path or container edge, where the fine serration and red-toned undersides can be viewed up close.
Spinel belongs to Terra Nova Nurseries’ FYRE WING™ series, developed from a rare leaf mutation through five years of breeding and selection beginning in 2021. It represents the first reliably expressed form of the lace-leaf trait in purple-toned heuchera, creating finely divided foliage that differs substantially from the rounded leaves associated with traditional coral bells. Fine hairs cover the leaf surfaces, adding texture and catching droplets of water or frost. Hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, this compact perennial fits edging, low foreground plantings, repeated foliage groups, and mixed containers.
FYRE WING™ Spinel Heuchera Care
Grow FYRE WING™ Spinel Heuchera in full sun to part shade, using more afternoon shade where summers are particularly hot. Choose organic-rich, moderately well-drained soil and position the crown at or slightly above the surrounding soil level. A slightly acidic pH around 5.8 to 6.2 is recommended by the breeder.
Water newly planted heuchera when the top 2 inches of soil begin to dry, maintaining steady moisture while roots establish. Mature plants can dry modestly between waterings and generally handle somewhat dry soil better than prolonged saturation. Apply a thin layer of compost or a balanced slow-release perennial fertilizer in spring, keeping feeding moderate.
Remove faded, damaged, or weathered leaves in early spring before the primary growth period begins. Since Spinel flowers sparingly, deadheading generally consists of cutting the occasional spent flower stalk back to its base. In colder regions, seasonal foliage decline is normal, and mulch should stay off the crown through winter. Container plants in colder climates benefit from winter placement that limits repeated freezing and thawing around the root ball.
FYRE WING™ Spinel Heuchera Spacing
Space FYRE WING™ Spinel Heuchera about 14 to 16 inches apart for a closely spaced edging or 18 inches apart when individual mounds should remain distinct. A 10- to 12-inch container provides suitable room for one young plant, using an organic, freely draining potting mix and a pot with open drainage holes.
FYRE WING™ Spinel Heuchera Companion Plants
Bleeding heart and fothergilla make useful landscape companions in partially shaded beds because they share a preference for organic soil and add different heights and spring interest around the low heuchera. Bacopa can trail from a mixed container with Spinel that receives regular moisture, good drainage, and protection from intense afternoon sun.
