FYRE WING™ Jadeite Heuchera has exceptionally fuzzy, deeply divided green leaves with a finely cut, wing-like appearance. Heuchera coccineum ‘Jadeite’ forms a compact-to-medium mound about 10 inches tall and 14 inches wide, with white flowers rising to roughly 14 inches in late spring. The fresh green foliage develops a light bronze cast in fall and tiny hairs across the surface catch dew, rain, and frost. We especially notice Jadeite after a cool morning, when moisture settles across the fuzzy leaf surfaces.
Jadeite belongs to Terra Nova Nurseries’ FYRE WING™ series, developed from a rare leaf mutation that led to a new lace-leaf form in heuchera. This selection represents the first reliably expressed green-toned form of that trait, combining a moderately growing mounded habit with unusually broad, fuzzy leaves. Its foliage is evergreen in milder climates and may become semi-evergreen in colder parts of its USDA zones 4 to 9 range. Its fresh green color works especially well as a quieter foliage layer beside darker coral bells, along woodland edges, in low border groupings, or in mixed patio containers.
FYRE WING™ Jadeite Heuchera Care
Grow in full sun to part shade, giving it protection from intense afternoon sun if summers are hot. Plant in enriched, organic soil with moderate drainage, keeping the crown at or slightly above the surrounding soil level. A slightly acidic medium around pH 5.8 to 6.2 is suitable.
Water regularly during the first growing season when the upper layer begins to dry. Once established, the fuzzy foliage is associated with better tolerance for moderately dry conditions than many smooth-leaved heucheras, but prolonged drought can still cause stress. Apply a light layer of compost or a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring, keeping fertilizer and mulch away from the crown. In colder climates, leave healthy foliage in place through winter to help shield the crown from drying winds and temperature swings.
Remove damaged or weathered leaves in early spring before fresh growth becomes active. Cut spent flower stems close to the base once flowering finishes, and thin individual worn leaves during the season. Container plants in colder zones benefit from winter protection around the pot, since exposed roots experience greater temperature fluctuations than plants growing in the ground.
FYRE WING™ Jadeite Heuchera Spacing
Space FYRE WING™ Jadeite Heuchera about 14 to 16 inches apart for a closely planted border or 18 inches apart when each mound should remain distinct. A single plant fits well in a 12- to 14-inch container, while mixed arrangements are better suited to pots 16 inches wide or larger. Use an organic, freely draining potting mix and a pot with open drainage holes.
FYRE WING™ Jadeite Heuchera Companion Plants
Hellebores are a good landscape partner for partly shaded beds because their leathery foliage and late-winter to spring flowers provide a very different texture alongside Jadeite’s finely divided green leaves. Boxwoods can add an evergreen backdrop in sites with good drainage, setting off the low heuchera mound in front. In containers, begonias pair well in part shade, adding prolonged seasonal flowers around the textured foliage and sharing a preference for fertile potting mix and consistent moisture.
