Here is another great way to provide bright color and texture to your garden and save our pollinators! Hello Yellow Butterfly Weed Asclepias tuberosa is a butterfly magnet and is a vital link in saving these beautiful pollinators who help to guarantee that we can enjoy our garden flowers and make food for years to come. Bright yellow drifts of flowers that sway above bright green foliage brighten any garden and provide a valuable resource of nectar or pollen to butterflies, bees and hummingbirds alike.
Native to North America, Hello Yellow Butterfly Weed will grow in every region of the United States except the hottest zone at the tip of the Florida Peninsula. It is hardy in Zones 3 to 9, and grows in just about any soil condition except wet soil. It makes a beautiful cut flower as well as a long lasting dried flower in your indoor arrangements. Intentional gardeners will plant this versatile perennial in their garden for the lovely yellow long lasting blooms and to help save the world’s pollinators, one garden at a time.
Hello Yellow Butterfly Milkweed Care
Asclepias Butterfly Weed is an easy care perennial. It prefers well drained rich soil and a full sun location. It blooms from early summer through to the hottest months, leaving behind the dark green foliage to complement other perennials and shrubs in your late summer garden. Since it tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, you can choose just about any full sun location in your landscape. To have it at its best, however, fertilize once or twice in the season with a general purpose fertilizer and keep it watered during dry periods, just enough to maintain a slightly moist soil. Mulch lightly to help soil to retain some moisture in areas you do not wish to water or are not reachable. Soil pH preferred is slightly acidic to neutral, 6.0 to 8.0.
Deadheading is not necessary, nor is pruning. You can divide the root ball to reduce the overall size of the clump, but realize that asclepias as a perennial class do not tolerate transplanting well at all and may not thrive for several seasons. Winter protection can constitute a good quality pine mulch laid over the root zone in the harshest winter regions.
Hello Yellow Butterfly Milkweed Spacing
Space your plants 24 inches apart for best performance. Asclepias grow to about 24 inches tall and wide. They are not typically bothered by plant diseases or insect pests and are relatively care free when planted in the right habitat. You can mass plant them in your landscape, as a walkway border, focal point; or create a wildlife and butterfly garden with them. They make beautiful cut flowers and can be dried for long lasting indoor arrangements.
