Make your landscape more inviting to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds while seriously upping the beauty by adding 'Leading Lady Pink' Monarda. This flowering perennial also goes by Bee Balm and Bergamot, blooms from spring through summer, and features lovely bright pink flowers. The petals boast dark pink spots and encircle pink styles. Monarda is clump-forming which means the plants will gradually spread out and cover a larger area.
The striking flowers are enough reason to include Monarda in landscapes, mass plantings, borders, containers, and even as cut flowers, but that is not all this plant offers. The flowers and the foliage are fragrant, making it a welcome addition to any deck or porch. The 'Leading Lady Pink' Monarda is deer-resistant, so it is an excellent option for areas with large deer populations. This plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Leading Lady Pink Bee Balm Care
Plant Monarda in areas with at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight. This plant can handle more light, but keep in mind that it has high water needs. Bergamot prefers consistently damp soil, and lots of light will cause the soil to dry out more quickly. Soil should be rich and fertile and have a pH of 6.5 to 8.0. Get the plant off to a good start by feeding using a balanced fertilizer in the spring.
Monarda plants do not require much pruning but remove spent flowers and overgrowth throughout the season. Pinch back the top of established plants once they reach 12 inches tall to encourage the plants to spread out. Cut the plant back to about 1 inch tall in the fall, and new growth will emerge in the spring.
Leading Lady Pink Bee Balm Spacing
Monarda is a great filler plant since it grows to be 10 to 14 inches tall. Space plants 22 to 28 inches apart, and with time they will fill in and create a thick carpet of greenery and blooms. Monarda can be propagated through division, so if the plants overwhelm an area, they can be dug up, split, and replanted.
