Brighten up your landscape with the 'Leading Lady Razzberry' Monarda. Showy flowers in a deep shade of pinkish-purple stand out against the green foliage and bring visual interest to a container or landscape bed. Expect fragrant flowers in spring and summer on this clump-forming perennial. Also known as Bee Balm or Bergamot, this plant thrives in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Monarda is native to North America, so it is very easy to maintain once established. This versatile plant can be used in borders, landscapes, mass plantings, and containers. Bee Balm also makes excellent cut flowers. This plant is deer-resistant but is known to attract bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.
Leading Lady Razzberry Bee Balm Care
Monarda flourishes in a sunny spot that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight. Soil should be fertile and have a pH of 6.5 to 8.0. This plant likes even moisture and prefers soil that does not completely dry out. Apply mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture. Fertilize in the spring using a balanced fertilizer to support new growth and flowers.
The 'Leading Lady Razzberry' Monarda does not require much maintenance, but spent flowers can be removed. Promote more growth by cutting back established plants once they reach a height of 12 inches. To prepare the plants for winter, you can trim back the growth to 1 inch in size.
Leading Lady Razzberry Bee Balm Spacing
Monarda will grow to be 10 to 14 inches tall and cover an area 22 to 28 inches wide. Space plants 22 to 28 inches apart to allow each plant room to grow without being crowded. As the plants become established and fill in, they can be dug up and split to promote more growth.
