If you’re searching for a creamy yellow flowering shrub to add to your landscape, don’t pass up the Lemon Meringue Potentilla! This beautiful cold-hardy shrub will bring delight each late-spring through fall with long-lasting double yellow flowers and bright green foliage. Its growth habit will have your landscape looking gorgeous with minimal maintenance. With a small span of 2’-3’ tall by 2’-3’ wide, this shrub will fit in almost anywhere!
A deciduous mounding shrub, this beauty has minimal maintenance needed to thrive within your landscape. It is deer resistant as its foliage is not palatable to deer. In contrast, butterflies will be drawn to this shrub in search of nectar. Created in the Canadian plains, this shrub can withstand the cold of zone 2.
The Lemon Meringue Potentilla is used as an alternative to boxwood or holly hedges. Due to the mounding habit and the ease of pruning, this makes a wonderful, shapeable hedge. You may also choose to plant individually, within raised beds, as mass planting or border planting.
Lemon Meringue Potentilla Plant Care
Lemon Meringue Potentilla thrives in full sun (6+ hours of sunlight per day). It does not like wet feet, so ensure that its new home is not in low-lying areas within your landscape.
To best establish your Lemon Meringue Potentilla, plant during cooler months in spring or fall. When planting, keep the crown of the plant level with the surface. Evaluate the nutrient density of the soil. If it is mostly clay or sand, amend with aged compost in an equal ratio of native soil to compost. For best results, add a 2” layer of aged compost on top of the newly planted shrub to allow nutrients to seep into the root base over time. Soil pH should range from acidic to neutral or 5-7 pH.
Fertilizing may be done once a year by using a 2” layer of aged compost on top of the root base or a balanced shake and feed fertilizer. Shake and feed fertilizers may be 18-24-16, 20-20-20 or 20-30-20.
Whether you choose to plant your Lemon Meringue Potentilla in hedges, container planting, mass planting, border planting or individual planting – the pruning is easy! You may choose to shape in any way you wish. It is best to shear or prune in late winter before new growth comes in.
Lemon Meringue Potentilla Plant Spacing
With the mounding growth habit, its span is 2’-3’ tall and 2’-3’ wide. If you are planting as a hedge, you may wish to space each shrub 2’-3’ apart to allow a dense hedge-line. If you’re looking for a looser foliage look, space 3’-4’ apart. Within garden beds that are shared with other varieties of plants, keep the Lemon Meringue Potentilla 3’-4’ away from the root bases of the surrounding plants.
