Growing Zones
Climbing to heights of 20 to 30 feet, Major Wheeler Trumpet Honeysuckle, or Lonicera semp. Major Wheeler is a fast-growing vine that can spread from 20 to 30 feet or more in a season. Carried in whorls at the branch ends, these showy, trumpeted flowers are up to 2 inches long and range in color from yellowy-orange to scarlet. These incredible blossoms deepen in color after opening, from late spring through summer, and the clusters of flowers contain both pale and darker blooms. Their lustrous oval leaves are medium-green on top, and bluish-green underneath. Established vines produce scarlet fruit in the fall.
The Major Wheeler Trumpet Honeysuckle is native to the eastern and southern United States. It is a versatile vine that is evergreen in mild climates, and deciduous in colder areas. This American Beauties Native Plants® is an aggressive grower, whose sweet nectar will attract hummingbirds and butterflies in spades. This vine spreads by suckering roots, and one of its biggest draws is that it is immune to the foliage mildew that can affect other honeysuckle varieties. It is relatively pest tolerant, but watch for signs of aphids.
Major Wheeler Trumpet Honeysuckle Care
Sunny areas are ideal for the Trumpet Vine, but it can grow almost anywhere and in almost any type of soil, so long as it has adequate drainage. It is tolerant of hot, dry areas, as well as cold areas with heavy frost.
As they grow in size and width, your Major Wheeler may need to be tied to a support to help disperse splaying branches. Without this support, your Major Wheeler may be a bit shrubby and short. Prune away old straggling honeysuckles in the early spring before growth begins.
Major Wheeler Trumpet Honeysuckle Spacing
They are gorgeous grown over arching trellises and at garden entries. You can use it to cover over fences, or train it to drape over a pergola. They also make a stunning focal point in any landscape. When planting, space your Major Wheeler 2 to 4 feet apart to give them lots of room to grow.
