The twisted, strappy leaves and snakehead flower buds make it obvious why this ornamental Allium was named after the mythical Medusa. The medium lavender globes of Medusa Allium look gorgeous dotted throughout a perennial border or planted in large groups to naturalize in a hot, dry spot. Ornamental Alliums are some of the easiest perennials to grow. Medusa is a recent introduction with 2-inch flower clusters that bloom for a month or more in late summer. When the flowers die back, let the architectural seedheads form and feed the birds all winter.
Ornamental Alliums are hard-working plants in the garden and require very little maintenance. This disease- and pest-resistant perennial bulb can be used in any spot that needs a shot of cool lavender color and is compact enough to grow in containers on the deck or patio. Although the foliage does have a profound onion scent when clipped or crushed, the flowers are sweetly scented and are guaranteed not to bring tears to your eyes. Medusa Allium is great to use in areas of heavy deer traffic, as they will not be eaten or bothered one bit by deer.
Medusa Allium Care
Plant Medusa in light, free-draining soil in full sun. Heavy clay soils should be amended with organic compost to provide good drainage for Ornamental Alliums. Fertilizing is rarely needed, although a top-dressing of bone meal or organic compost in the early spring will provide added nutrition if blooming has slowed down over the years. Medusa is a drought-tolerant plant and will only require supplemental watering while young. Water with half an inch of water a week for the first year, letting the top 3-4 inches of soil dry between sessions.
Medusa won't require deadheading and puts on a second act when the globe-like seedheads form. They can remain for months, drying in place to add structure to a winter garden. You can clean up ornamental Alliums in the spring. Leaving the strappy leaves in place for as long as possible allows the bulb to produce energy for strong growth.
Medusa Allium Spacing
Medusa Allium has a mature height and spread of 20-24 inches and looks best when planted in large groups of 3 or 5. Space each plant 16 inches apart on the center. This will allow good air circulation around the foliage to prevent disease or pest infestation.
