Japanese Maples are much loved for their wide variety of colors and leaf shapes. Peaches and Cream Japanese Maple is another example of this variety. The peachy pink leaves and a creamy center of veins. The leaves offer 3 season interest while the beautiful branch and trunk shape offer winter interest. If you are looking for something beautiful year round, this is the tree for you
Acer palmatum ‘Peaches and Cream’ is ideal for the smaller garden. The height is a slow growing 10-20 feet with a width of 15-20 feet. Japanese Maples have very few pests or diseases that bother them. These are also very low maintenance trees. Very little pruning needs to be done to achieve a pleasing natural shape.
Peaches and Cream Japanese Maple Care
Japanese Maples are best placed out of the way of overhead power lines. They take a while to reach full height, but do not do well with heavy pruning. The pH should be slightly acidic, 5.0-6.0. An average textured, well drained soil will keep Peaches and Cream growing happy. Staking may be needed for the first few years if the site is windy. Japanese Maples prefer a semi-shaded spot that has a bit of shelter from the worst of the winter weather.
Acer {almatum can have more than one main leader and it will not affect their strength. Minimal pruning should be done the first few years after planting. Later, lower branches that are not wanted can be removed to the trunk. Branches that make up the crown are better thinned every few years in the late winter when the overall branch structure can be seen. Late winter is also the right time to remove dead, dying, diagonal or diseased branches.
Peaches and Cream Japanese Maple Spacing
Japanese Maples look great either in an Asian inspired planting or a cottage garden setting. They also are very attractive in a large container. These trees are very slow growing and will happily spend their lives in a container 24 inches in diameter or larger. The only upkeep for container grown Japanese Maples is regular watering through the dry months and to do some root pruning and repotting into fresh soil every 2-3 years.
