Perpetual Purple™ Meadow Sage offers color that doesn’t quit, because the deep purple stays showy even after the petals drop. It grows a compact 16–18 inches tall and about 16–18 inches wide, so it delivers strong vertical bloom spikes without taking over your border. Many meadow sages fade to dull bracts between flushes, but this selection keeps a saturated look longer and rebounds more quickly. We’ve had the best results using it as a repeating “purple punctuation” through sunny beds for steady color.
Salvia nemorosa 'Balsalpur154' forms an upright, clump-forming mound with aromatic foliage that tends to be ignored by deer. Expect bloom spikes from late spring into early fall with minimal encouragement. It handles heat well and is drought tolerant once established. Use it to stitch pollinator activity into borders, keep a clean edge along hardscapes, or add reliable height in mixed containers that need a long-season backbone.
Perpetual Purple™ Meadow Sage Care
Give Perpetual Purple™ full sun for the densest growth and the richest flower color. Plant in moist, well-drained soil that can dry slightly between waterings, with a soil pH around 6.0–7.5. Good drainage is important in winter, so avoid low pockets where water lingers.
Water regularly during the first growing season; after that, soak when the top couple inches of soil are dry and the plant’s leaves look less perky in the morning. A light spring feeding is plenty, and overly rich fertilizer can push weak growth at the expense of bloom. In cold weather it dies back and returns from the crown, so leave the basal growth intact and let the old stems protect it until cleanup time.
As each main flush finishes, shear the spent flower spikes back to just above fresh leafy growth to trigger the next round of bloom. If the plant stretches in midsummer, a harder cutback to the newly developed foliage tightens the mound and can set up a later showing. In containers, don’t let it sit soggy in winter, and move the pot to a sheltered spot if repeated freeze-thaw cycles are common.
Perpetual Purple™ Meadow Sage Spacing
Space plants 15–18 inches apart so the clumps can mingle and still dry quickly after rain. For a single specimen in a pot, aim for a 12–14 inch container with a fast-draining mix and room for roots to cool in summer.
In the landscape, pair Perpetual Purple™ with coneflower and sedum to layer purple spikes over sturdy late-season structure, and add ajuga nearby for a foliage contrast that stays tidy when salvia is between flushes. For containers, tuck in verbena for a longer spill and a few pansies at the rim for an early-season boost before the salvia takes over.
