Snowberry shrubs are one of the most sought after native plants for home landscaping. They bloom profusely early in the summer and set masses of giant berries that last for the birds and other wildlife throughout the winter. Pinky Promise™ Snowberry has all of the positive traits, but also sports the pinkest berries that resemble tiny gumballs. The color is really unexpected and amazing.
Snowberries attract all manner of beneficial pollinators and birds. The tangled, dense branches even provide shelter during the winter for small animals in the home garden. Pinky Promise™ is no different. Bees and butterflies will happily sip the nectar from the flowers, while non-migratory birds will look forward to the tasty berries all winter long. The smaller and more compact size of Pinky Promise™ makes it a great candidate to be either container grown for a smaller garden or used as low, informal hedging.
Pinky Promise™ Snowberry Care
Snowberries are the ultimate in low maintenance shrubs. You can almost plant them and forget them, although who would want to forget such beautiful berries? Full sun to partial shade will suit the flowering and fruit set of Pinky Promise™. A wide range of soil textures, from clay to sand will support the vigorous growth Snowberries are known for. Well drained soil is preferred over waterlogged soil, although snowberries make a great plant for the second and third zones of a Rain Garden plan. Snowberries will be essentially drought tolerant after they have matured for a couple years.
Fertilizing Snowberries is not necessary. Over feeding these shrubs will result in too much foliar growth and not enough flowers, encouraging aphid infestations. Mulching with an organic compost in the fall will provide organic material to bulk up the soil and make it more water retentive. This results in far less watering in the future. Pruning needs to be done in the late winter after all of the berries and leaves are gone. Cut out and dead, dying, diseased or diagonal branches. Snowberries have a very natural vase shape.
Pinky Promise™ Spacing
Pinky Promise is much smaller than the traditional varieties of Snowberry. The height is 2-3 feet and the width is 2-3 feet. Spacing these shrubs in a hedge planting is very important for proper air circulation. 3 feet on center is the recommended distance.
