The Pow Wow Wildberry is a stellar rosy-purple coneflower that adds mid-summer color to the landscape just as spring bloomers wrap up their showy period. This selection has a superior branching habit, making for prolific flowers in the first year of planting. The blooms on this Echinacea cultivar are bright burgundy pink with a large orange-brown center and do not fade. Coneflowers like this one are notorious for attracting butterflies to the landscape.
The Pow Wow Wildberry is a tough, sturdy, and easy-to-grow selection. It is drought tolerant and hardy; the parent species of this cultivar is native to the United States and found in prairies, meadows, and open woods. It is an excellent choice for a butterfly planting or native plant landscapes. Gardeners may utilize it for a prairie garden or areas with intense hot sun. It pairs well with black-eyed Susans and grasses.
Pow Wow Wildberry Coneflower Care
The Pow Wow wildberry coneflower prefers a site with full sun and handles heat well. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires only very occasional watering. It prefers average to dry soil moisture. Amend soils that have a high clay content with plenty of organic matter to improve drainage. An annual application of a slow-release fertilizer in early spring is enough to encourage vigor.
This coneflower will keep blooming without deadheading but gardeners can snip off the spent flowers to keep the plant looking tidy. Cut the plant back completely after a killing freeze or leave the seedheads to provide winter interest and food for birds, then cut back in early spring.
