If ever there was a plant deserving of its name, it is the Queen of the Prairie. This lovely perennial reigns over a landscape and puts on a spectacular display during the summer. Tiny pink flowers grow in clusters and have a feathery texture. The Filipendula rubra or meadowsweet also features bright green lance-shaped foliage that provides a stunning background for the striking blooms. This sun-loving beauty is easy to grow and easy to admire.
Queen of the Prairie is a sizable clump-forming plant that can overtake an area when allowed to self-seed. Use this plant to anchor a bed or mass planting, serve as a border, or define a property line. This plant is a herbaceous perennial, so while it makes a wonderful privacy screen during the summer, all growth will fade in the fall. Trim the flowers to include in arrangements. This deer-resistant plant will attract butterflies and is native to North America, where it grows as a perennial in zones 3 through 8.
Queen of the Prairie Care
This plant will thrive in full sun to partial shade in rich, moist soil. Well-drained soil is ideal, but this adaptable plant can handle poorly-drained soil. Water consistently to maintain soil dampness as this plant does not like to dry out. Apply balanced fertilizer during the spring.
Cut Queen of the Prairie back if it becomes unwieldy. Spent flowers can be removed if you do not want the plant to self-seed. All growth can be trimmed back in the fall.
Queen of the Prairie Spacing
Queen of the Prairie is a large, upright perennial that can grow 6 to 8 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. Space plants 3 to 4 feet apart create a lovely, blooming hedge.
