- Use As A Filler In Containers
Producing creamy white centered, medium green edged and light green accented leaves, this gorgeous specimen will be a shade garden favorite! Besides the unique variegated foliage, this features early to mid-summer blooming white with a hint of lavender flowers. This perennial is easy to maintain and requires little care throughout spring, summer and fall. Spanning up to a whopping 55” wide, this is a fantastic focal point plant!
Hummingbirds and butterflies will be making a stop in your garden to enjoy its blooms. This perennial is best used in both border planting and general landscaping. As the plant progresses through its growing season, dying foliage is tucked under the newer growth which allows peace of mind that you will not need to tend to it until early spring. If you had to choose only one hosta to plant, this is one fine example that we recommend for a showcase garden!
Shadowland Miss America Hosta Care
Hardy to zones 3-9, this perennial can withstand the harshest of environments. Plant this in well-draining sandy loam to allow the roots plenty of breathing space. Morning sun is perfectly fine and will produce vibrant colors within the leaves. Be sure to not allow the hot afternoon sun to reach its leaves as this can be detrimental to the health of the plant. Average quality soil is fine, however it is recommended to amend soil with aeration boosters to allow breathing room for the roots. Neutral or slightly acidic pH soil is best. Consistent moisture that does not bog down the roots lends a hand in keeping the beautiful foliage going. Mulching can assist in keeping the soil moist, however you’ll need to watch for holes in the center of the leaves.
If there are holes on the leaves, rake back any mulch you have near the plant and apply slug bait or traps as they are the culprit for the holes. In cooler climates it is best to apply finely shredded organic materials, such as shredded fallen leaves, to protect the crown of the plant. Pruning Miss America hostas is not necessary. All you need to do is clear out the old foliage in early winter to make way for new growth come spring.
Shadowland Miss America Hosta Spacing
This is a rather large specimen that loves to be the center of attention! In all planting applications, ensure that the spacing is kept around 55” on center between plants. Container gardening can be achieved, however this should be planted by itself in a large raised bed or specialty container.
