Silverstone™ Cotoneaster stands out for its silver-blue foliage and fountain-like spread that softens hard edges in a landscape. it matures 2–3 feet tall and stretches 4–6 feet wide, forming a broad, mounded profile that works as living architecture. The fine leaves carry a cool cast that breaks up heavy green plantings and gives the eye a place to rest. Bred and selected by Dr. John Ruter at the University of Georgia for superior color and vigor, it also offers notable resistance to fire blight.

Small white flowers appear in spring on old wood, followed by bright red berries that hold into fall and feed local birds. Once established, Cotoneaster buxifolius ‘RutCot1’ tolerates drought and even salt exposure, and deer typically leave it alone. Its dense, springy branching makes it effective as edging, groundcover, slope coverage, or a foundation plant that fills space with texture rather than bulk. In mild climates it remains semi-evergreen, keeping structure through the colder months.

Silverstone™ Cotoneaster Care

Plant Silverstone™ in full sun for the strongest color and tightest habit. It adapts to sandy, loamy, or clay soils as long as drainage is sharp; persistently wet sites can cause decline. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce frequency and allow soil to dry slightly between thorough soakings. Fertilizer is rarely necessary, though a light application of a balanced granular feed in early spring can support growth in lean soils.

Pruning is optional and mostly cosmetic. If shaping is needed, trim lightly in late winter or very early spring, keeping in mind that cutting stems will remove that season’s flowers and berries. In colder zone 5 gardens, stems may die back in severe winters, but roots typically resprout once temperatures moderate.

Silverstone™ Cotoneaster Spacing

Space plants 4–6 feet apart in landscape installations to allow their natural width to develop fully. For large container planting, choose a wide, heavy pot at least 20 inches across to accommodate the spreading habit.

We use Silverstone™ where other shrubs struggle, especially in hot, dry spots near pavement. In sunny borders, pair it with lavender for contrast in texture and fragrance, or plant alongside Russian sage and sedum for a drought-tolerant composition. On slopes or along driveways, weave it with juniper bushes to create a layered, low-maintenance groundcover effect.
