Stained Glass Hosta may be the most beautiful yellow Hosta yet. Large, rounded, golden yellow leaves are edged in a beautiful apple green that makes this perennial glow. Stained Glass would work well planted in large groups to brighten up a shady garden border or in containers to highlight its modern architectural form. If you look very closely, no two leaf markings are the same.
Hosta are a quintessential shady garden plant that go well with Astilbe, Bleeding Heart and ferns. The bold lines of Hosta contrast to the finer foliage of plants found in a woodland garden. Stained Glass Hosta would make an excellent filler plant and dramatic color contrast in a mixed perennial container. Planted with a dark leaved sweet potato vine and an annual Gartenmeister Fuchsia, this Hosta would sing. A 2006 Hosta of the Year
Stained Glass Hosta Care
Hostas like well drained, but consistently moist soil. Water logged soil will cause root rot in these stream side marginal plants. Average soil texture is acceptable. Soil pH is not much of an issue either. As long as there is room for the roots to spread and moisture available, Hostas are happy. Mulching of Stained Glass Hosta with an organic compost or fine arborist chips will help the crown survive a very cold winter. This perennial dies back all of the way to the ground for winter.
Stained Glass Hosta will benefit from a slow release, well balanced fertilizer at the beginning of the spring just as the new leaves emerge. This will help the leaves to form nice and strong and keep the plant vigorously forming new leaves. Slugs are sometimes an issue. Typically there is only minor damage, especially after the plant has reached full size for the summer. Either removing the damaged leaves or placing a thin layer of broken eggshells around the base of the hosta will lessen the problem.
Stained Glass Hosta Spacing
Stained Glass Hosta is one of the medium sized Hostas. Height of 15-20 inches and width of 30-40 inches it is perfect as an edging plant or as a taller ground cover in a woodland garden. Spacing of 36 inches on center will help this Hosta to keep adequate air circulation to help keep pests and diseases away.
