Taiga Clematis turns a trellis or patio obelisk into a summer display with double purple flowers tipped in lime. The spiky, star-like blooms become fuller as the flowers mature, reaching about 3 to 6 inches wide, so the vine can show more than one flower form at the same time. The vine climbs about 6 to 8 feet tall with a 2- to 3-foot spread. We think it is especially rewarding in a container near a seating area, where the unusual flower details are easy to see.
This award-winning clematis hybrid was introduced at the 2017 Chelsea Flower Show and quickly became known for its exotic-looking purple and green flower pattern. It blooms from summer into fall on current-season growth. Taiga Clematis is deciduous and cold hardy in Zones 6-9. Its moderate climbing habit works well on fences, trellises, mailbox posts, porch railings, obelisks, and narrow garden structures. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and cut stems can be used in small arrangements.
Taiga Clematis Care
Grow Taiga Clematis in full sun to part shade, or in all-day lightly filtered sun where summers are hot. The vine flowers best with several hours of bright light, and the root zone appreciates mulch or low companion plants to keep it cool. Plant in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and a pH around 5.5 to 7.0.
Water newly planted vines deeply so moisture reaches below the crown and encourages roots to move into the surrounding soil. Established plants tolerate short dry periods, but flowering is better when soil stays evenly moist during summer heat. Fertilize once in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or compost, and avoid heavy feeding that produces leafy growth at the expense of bloom. Add a 1- to 2-inch mulch layer in late fall or early winter to protect the crown and reduce soil erosion around the base.
Taiga Clematis is a pruning group 3 vine, flowering on new growth made each spring. Prune in late winter to early spring when new buds begin to swell, cutting stems back to about 12 to 24 inches and leaving strong buds below each cut. Tie fresh shoots to a trellis early, since young stems are easier to guide before they twine through the support.
Taiga Clematis Spacing
Space Taiga Clematis about 3 feet apart when covering a fence, wall trellis, or arbor section. For containers, use a deep pot at least 18 to 20 inches wide with drainage holes, and place a trellis or obelisk in the pot at planting time so the roots are not disturbed later. Container vines need steady moisture in summer and a protected winter position in colder Zone 6 gardens.
Grow Taiga Clematis with allium, beardtongue, balloon flower, or creeping liriope at the base where the soil drains well and the lower roots stay shaded. Sea thrift and dianthus can edge sunny trellis beds, adding low foliage and flowers near the vine’s crown. In containers, alyssum, fan flower, or bacopa can cover the soil surface and trail over the rim while Taiga Clematis climbs upward.
