It looks as if the Taiga Clematis came straight out of a fairy tale! It took the gardening world by storm when it was introduced at the Chelsea Flower show in 2017. Gardeners fell in love with the spectacular bi-color flowers that feature curving sepals that make the flowers look like stars. Now it’s your turn to experience these magnificent blooms for yourself! The flowers change color and shape as they continue to bloom, making a vine in full-bloom an incredible sight. Taiga is a stunning addition to southern gardens, and is sure to make many jaws drop all summer long. The gorgeous purple blooms with yellow-green tips grow in masses in the summer. It is one that blends well with other plants while still being a stand-out. It has an upright climbing habit that makes it a perfect addition to your patio containers. Try planting Taiga in a large container with an artistic trellis. Make sure to site the container where you can enjoy these unusual blooms up-close. This showy clematis variety is also perfect for planting near entryways, decks, patios, or anywhere else where people can stop and enjoy the colorful display throughout the season.
The foliage is bright green and really helps this plant pop. However, the flowers are the showstopper with this one. They are bright purple, double blooms with yellow-green tips. Bloom season begins in the late spring and lasts through summer. The Taiga Clematis has an upright climbing growth habit. It reaches a height up to eight feet with a spread of three feet wide. It is great for privacy purposes. Use as an accent plant or focal point, its cut flowers are a great addition to any arrangement. It does well when planted in containers and used as a climber! This one is sure to bring butterflies and birds to your yard.
Taiga Clematis Care
When you receive Clematis Taiga, plant it 2-4” deeper than the crown, or at least 2-4” of the stems should be covered with soil. Mulch heavily to retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. The Taiga Clematis can be planted in full to part sun. When planted in full sun, your plant will bring more blooms. Soil should be well drained and moist. Avoid overwatering, and water whenever the top 1-2” of soil is dry. While tolerable of most soils, the Ph level should be neutral. Taiga clematis is in pruning group 3, which means it blooms on new wood. If you choose to prune, it should be done in early spring as new growth appears. The Taiga Clematis is a continuous feed and fertilizer should be applied regularly. Early in the season, deadheading can be beneficial.
Taiga Clematis Spacing
If you’re looking to use the Taiga Clematis for privacy purposes and looking for a seamless appearance, space it two to three feet, center on center. If you are looking to cover walls or to use for an accent plant, space three feet center on center. When planting in containers, the size needed is fifteen inches wide, and eighteen inches deep.
