Foliage Interest

Tip Top Aeonium, a dwarf form of Aeonium arborescens, packs dramatic color into a compact, 12‑inch frame. Rosettes emerge lime‑green and age to rich burgundy‑black at the edges, creating a two‑tone accent that turns heads in rock gardens, modern containers, and coastal beds. Plants branch freely, so each cutting soon forms a mound of tight, spoon‑shaped leaves that read as living sculpture. Given room to mature, it may send up domed sprays of soft yellow flowers that attract early pollinators. Also known as Dwarf Tree Aeonium, this selection tolerates drought, wind, and salt, making it a top choice for low‑water landscapes.

Native to Gran Canaria, Tip Top Aeonium thrives with minimal fuss yet offers several landscape perks: evergreen foliage for year‑round structure, heat resistance through sizzling summers, and surprising deer indifference. The clumping habit fills a 1‑ to 2‑foot circle but remains low enough for edging pathways or spotlighting larger cacti. In mixed succulent bowls it supplies dark contrast against silvery Senecio or chalky echeverias. Indoors, its sculptural rosettes lend architectural interest to bright windowsills or sunrooms.

Best Locations For Growing Tip Top Aeonium

Outdoors: sunny patios, coastal gardens, rooftop planters, and xeric borders where soil drains quickly.
Indoors: south‑ or west‑facing windows, bright conservatories, or offices with strong supplemental lighting. Keep containers on stands or shelves that showcase the tidy mound. Tip Top is non‑toxic to people, but ingestion can upset pets; place high if curious cats share your space.

Tip Top Aeonium Sunlight Requirements

Provide at least six hours of direct bright light daily. Near a window, set the pot within 12–18 inches of glass facing south or west; morning sun from an east window is also acceptable when afternoons are hot. In intense inland sun, a sliver of midday shade prevents leaf scorch. If grown under LEDs, aim for 12–14 hours of full‑spectrum light daily.

Tip Top Aeonium Care

Plant in a shallow clay or plastic pot with multiple drain holes and a gritty mix of 50 percent cactus soil and 50 percent pumice or perlite. Repot every three years or when stems crowd the rim, timing the job for late spring as new growth begins. Indoors, rotate the container monthly for even rosette color. In USDA zones 9–11, leave plants outside year‑round; elsewhere, move pots indoors when temperatures dip below 30 °F.

Watering Tip Top Aeonium

Soak thoroughly, then allow the entire mix to dry before the next drink—usually every 10–14 days in active growth (fall through spring) and every three to four weeks in summer dormancy. Shriveling leaves signal thirst; mushy bases indicate excess moisture. Always empty saucers after watering.

Feeding Tip Top Aeonium

Fertilize sparingly: once in mid‑spring and again in early autumn with a half‑strength, low‑nitrogen cactus fertilizer (such as 2‑7‑7). Skip feeding during summer heat and winter rest to avoid weak, over‑lush growth.
