Growing Zones
As its name suggests, the Upright Japanese Plum Yew develops an appealing vertical habit. Also known botanically as Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Fastigiata', this evergreen shrub produces lush and dense dark green foliage. With a final height of 5 to 6 feet tall, Upright Japanese Plum Yew is perfect for adding some winter interest to any landscape.
Loved for its foliage, the Upright Japanese Plum Yew is thankfully resistant to deer browsing. Furthermore, once established it can tolerate both heat and drought. This yew is ideal for growing as a stand-alone specimen or for forming an evergreen hedge in zones 6 to 8.
Upright Japanese Plum Yew Care
The Upright Japanese Plum Yew thrives when grown in partial shade or with protection from the harsh afternoon sun. Adaptable to a range of different soils, this shrub favors a well-drained substrate that stays evenly moist. To help a good root system to develop, water this yew well upon planting and for the first few growing seasons. A slow-release general fertilizer applied in the spring will help maintain plant health and encourage new foliage.
Pruning is not strictly required. However, to keep a neat form and desired size, you can trim this Upright Japanese Plum Yew in early summer.
Upright Japanese Plum Yew Spacing
The Upright Japanese Plum Yew generally grows to around 5 to 6 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. When grown as a stand-alone shrub, a spacing of 3 to 4 feet away from a neighbor will allow its form to be appreciated.
