Variegated Pittosporum displays creamy white, gray-green, and light green foliage on a rounded evergreen form in warm landscapes. It also produces small white spring flowers with a sweet orange-blossom fragrance when plants are not clipped too tightly. Pittosporum tobira 'Variegatum' matures about 6 to 8 feet tall and wide in many landscapes, although older or lightly pruned plants sometimes grow larger. It shines near patios and entries, where the foliage looks polished and the spring scent can be noticed up close.

This Japanese pittosporum selection is valued for foliage first, but the fragrant flowers add a welcome spring detail. It tolerates coastal exposure, urban conditions, heat, and mild drought once established, provided the roots have good drainage. Variegated Pittosporum can be grown as a hedge, border shrub, privacy screen, foundation plant, container specimen, or small multi-stemmed tree. Its pale variegation works well behind darker shrubs and near hardscape, because it adds year-round contrast and doesn't need flowers to carry the planting.

Variegated Pittosporum Care

Plant Variegated Pittosporum in full sun to partial sun, although part shade is recommended in very hot climates. It grows best in loose, moist, well-drained soil and should not be planted where water collects after rain. Acidic to neutral soil with a pH around 5.5 to 7.0 is preferred.

Water deeply after planting, and keep the root ball lightly moist during the first growing season. Established plants tolerate mild drought, and the soil should dry slightly before watering again. Fertilize in spring with a slow-release shrub and tree fertilizer before new growth begins. Mulch with pine straw or shredded bark to conserve moisture, keeping the mulch off the trunk and lower stems.

Prune Variegated Pittosporum after the spring flowers fade if fragrance is a priority. For hedges, shape lightly and keep the base wider than the top so lower branches receive sun. To train it as a small tree, gradually remove lower limbs and basal shoots while keeping a full upper canopy.

Variegated Pittosporum Spacing

Space Variegated Pittosporum 4 to 5 feet apart for a solid hedge or screen. Allow 8 to 12 feet for a single shrub or small-tree form, depending on how much natural spread you want to keep. For containers, choose a pot at least 20 to 24 inches wide with drainage holes, and use a well-drained potting mix amended with perlite or pumice if needed.

In sunny beds, let Variegated Pittosporum serve as a pale evergreen backdrop for agapanthus and irises, which can echo the shrub’s clean shape with their upright leaves. Include bottlebrush in warm coastal gardens for flowers and a different leaf texture, as it shares similar sun and drainage needs. In containers, use lantana or purslane around the edge for heat-tolerant color with lower water demand once established.
