Dolce® ‘Sultry Night’ Coral Bells (Heuchera hybrid) delivers dramatic foliage color in a compact, refined form. Deeply ruffled leaves emerge glossy in spring, maturing to near-black with a rich purple overlay that extends to the undersides and stems. This low, mounded perennial reaches just 8–10 inches tall, spreading 16–20 inches wide, making it ideal for edging and layered plantings. In our shade beds, it has held its dark coloration consistently through summer heat without thinning at the center.
Native to North America, coral bells are valued for adaptability and dependable performance. ‘Sultry Night’ is evergreen in mild winters and offers strong foliage presence even in colder zones with protection. Airy midsummer flower scapes rise 24–26 inches above the foliage and attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The plant tolerates salt exposure and performs well under black walnut trees due to juglone resistance. Use it in mass plantings, woodland borders, formal edging, patio containers, or as a contrasting focal point among lighter foliage plants.
Dolce® Sultry Night Coral Bells Care
Plant in part shade for best color retention, especially in warmer climates; full shade is suitable, and full sun is tolerated in northern regions with consistent moisture. Grow in humus-rich, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Good drainage is essential to prevent crown rot, particularly in winter. Water regularly during establishment, then maintain average moisture without saturating the soil. Incorporate compost at planting time to improve soil structure. Apply a light, balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed.
Trim away winter-damaged or tattered leaves in early spring to refresh the mound and encourage new growth. Deadhead spent flower scapes to maintain a clean appearance, or leave them for added height. In colder climates, apply a layer of mulch in late fall to reduce frost heaving. If plants lift during freeze-thaw cycles, gently firm them back into place in early spring and top-dress with compost.
Dolce® Sultry Night Coral Bells Spacing
Space plants 16–20 inches apart in borders or mass plantings to allow proper air circulation and mature spread. For containers, choose a pot at least 12–14 inches wide with drainage holes to support root development. Combine with shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, hostas, hellebores, or ornamental grasses that prefer similar moisture levels. In mixed containers, position coral bells toward the front or mid-layer where the foliage can anchor the design.
