Spirea is a popular shrub for good reason. Double Play Doozie Spirea just might be the best choice yet. The plant blooms nonstop from late spring into fall with reddish-purple flowers. This spirea is seedless, which means it won't be invasive, plus all the plant's energy goes into making flowers, and then making more flowers … with no deadheading or special attention from you. Just sit back and enjoy the pretty green leaves and bright flowers.
Double Play Doozie Spirea grows to nearly 3 feet high and 3 feet around. With its small size, rounded shape and continuous bloom, it is a perfect shrub for edging sidewalks or entryways or for low borders in your garden. Plant it in multiples of three for the best color effect. This spirea also is an excellent filler plant for containers, ensuring all-season color in front of taller leaves or flowers. Double Plays are hardy to the cold of zones 3 and can take heat through zone 8. This best-selling shrub also is deer resistant.
Double Play Doozie Spirea Care
Plant your Double Play Doozie Spirea shrubs in part sun to full sun for the best health and bloom. The flowers bloom on both old wood and new branches, which is one reason why the shrubs look so full of color in summer. All you have to do is remove the oldest, woodiest looking stems every few years in early spring. You don't need to remove spent flowers, but a light prune after its first bloom puts even more energy into the shrub's next bloom. Water it regularly, especially in summer heat.
Double Play Doozie Spirea Spacing
Space groups of spirea plants about 2 to 3 feet apart (measuring from center to center) for the best border or edge effect. In a container, give it plenty of room right in front.
