Gunsmoke Switch Grass stands out for its unusually broad, steel-blue blades, giving it a strong, architectural look. It forms a dense upright clump, 4–5 foot tall and wide, that holds its shape instead of looking wispy too soon. The foliage color shows up early in spring and offers bold presence for sunny sites that may swing between dry and damp. We love its four seasons of appeal: cool-toned foliage through summer, softer seedhead effect in fall, and vertical structure in winter.
Panicum virgatum is a North American native warm-season grass valued for stamina, wildlife cover, and long season appeal. This selection leans hard into foliage color and width. In late summer, airy silvery-tan flower panicles rise above the clump, then age into smoky seedheads. It performs in prairie-style borders, rain gardens, modern mass plantings, pond edges, and broad foundation beds where a sturdy vertical accent keeps the design from going flat. Deer tend to leave it alone, and the standing stems and seedheads offer shelter and seasonal interest after flowering perennials are finished.
Gunsmoke Switch Grass Care
Plant Gunsmoke Switch Grass in full sun for the strongest color and the most upright habit. It grows in clay, loam, or sandy soil with an acidic to neutral pH, and handles both dry ground and seasonally moist sites as long as drainage is not stagnant. Rich soil is not necessary, and overly fertile conditions can make the plant more open.
Water regularly while the clump is establishing. Reduce frequency once roots have settled in. Fertilizer is usually unnecessary in average soil, and too much feeding can weaken the strong form that makes this grass useful. Switch grass goes dormant for winter, with the foliage fading to tan and the crown resting until spring.
Cut the entire clump down to the ground in late winter or very early spring before new blades emerge. Leave the dried stems standing through fall and winter, since they are part of the plant’s appeal and help protect the crown. If older clumps outgrow their space, divide them after dormancy while the plant is starting to wake up.
Gunsmoke Switch Grass Spacing
Space plants about 3–4 feet apart when planting in groups so each clump has room to develop its full outline. For containers, use a pot at least 20 inches wide and deep, since this grass builds a substantial root mass and needs enough soil to stay stable.
In the landscape, pair Gunsmoke Switch Grass with amsonia and sedum for a long-season mix of fine texture, broad foliage contrast, and dependable late color. In large containers, creeping Jenny can spill over the rim while foamy bells adds a fuller leaf backdrop below the rising blue blades.
