Summerific® ‘Garnet Globes’ Hibiscus is a standout hardy perennial that brings dramatic red blooms to the garden in a compact, well-shaped form. Each flower reaches up to 7 inches across and features a rich garnet hue with a dark central eye. Unlike other hibiscus that can sprawl or become leggy, this variety maintains a tight, mounded habit, growing 36–42 inches tall and wide. We’ve grown it successfully in both mixed borders and containers, and it reliably produces flower-covered stems from midsummer through early fall.
This North American native is well-suited to modern and traditional gardens. The broad, dark olive foliage holds its structure and color all season, even in heat. Once established, it grows quickly, making up for its late spring emergence with rapid development and full flowering by mid to late summer. Deer usually leave it alone, and pollinators are frequent visitors. It performs well in borders, as a focal point, or in containers, and thrives in moist, sunny areas such as rain gardens or low swales.
Summerific® Garnet Globes Rose Mallow Care
Plant in full sun for best flowering, though part sun (at least 4 hours daily) is acceptable in warmer climates. Hibiscus prefers fertile, well-drained soil that remains consistently moist, especially during dry periods. It grows best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0 to 6.8), but tolerates a range of soil types when drainage is adequate. Water thoroughly during establishment, then maintain even moisture through the growing season. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage strong stems and bud development. Avoid planting too late into summer, as early rooting helps prepare the plant for winter.
Cut stems back to 3–4 inches in early spring before new shoots emerge. Do not prune in fall; leaving stems intact helps protect the crown in colder zones. Deadheading is optional but improves appearance. In containers, water regularly and mulch to maintain root zone moisture. Hardy hibiscus may not show growth until late spring, but once active, it grows rapidly. Be patient if the plant appears slow to return.
Summerific® Garnet Globes Rose Mallow Spacing
Space plants 36 inches apart in beds and borders to allow for full spread and airflow. When planting in containers, choose a pot at least 16 inches wide and deep to accommodate mature roots. In container groupings, pair with moisture-tolerant, sun-loving perennials such as ornamental grasses, bee balm, or goatsbeard. Avoid pairing with drought-sensitive or shade-loving plants, as hibiscus thrives best in sunny, well-watered conditions.
