Growing Zones
Sedum is a wonderful plant for a sunny spot with good drainage, and the Sunsparkler® Cosmic Comet Stonecrop Sedum is an excellent choice because it adds a burst of color. The flat, thick leaves are blue with hints of purple and grow in an evenly spaced, almost geometric pattern. The Sedum rupestre boasts large clusters of tiny hot pink flowers during the summer.
This clump-forming filler really does best when used as a ground cover or a landscape plant. Finding the right spot is vital because when Sedum grows in an area with the right conditions, this plant is incredibly low maintenance. The beautiful blooms draw butterflies and other pollinators, and the thick, succulent-like foliage is not preferred by nuisance animals like rabbits. This frost-hardy perennial grows in USDA zones 5 through 10.
Sunsparkler® Cosmic Comet Stonecrop Sedum Plant Care
Sedum needs full sun so find a spot that receives at least 6 hours of daylight. The Sunsparkler® Cosmic Comet Stonecrop Sedum has average water needs. It can often go a couple of weeks without a drink, although newly planted Sedum needs to stay on a more consistent watering schedule. Soil should promote drainage because this plant does not like wet feet. Ideally, the soil pH will be slightly acidic to neutral.
Stonecrop is not a heavy feeder, and applying a thin layer of organic compost during the spring is usually enough to sustain the plant. You can use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once a year in the spring. Leave the growth in place at the end of the growing season and remove all of the old growth in the spring as the new growth starts to appear. Trim the plant back by half during the summer if the stalks appear leggy.
Sunsparkler® Cosmic Comet Stonecrop Sedum Plant Spacing
Sedum naturally maintains a low profile and only gets 3 to 5 inches tall. The plant will spread out about 12 inches, and it can be spaced approximately 12 inches center to center from other plants.
