For a stunning groundcover, the SunSparkler® Firecracker Stonecrop Sedum really does fit the bill. Producing a mat of small, burgundy-red-colored leaves, this sedum provides magnificent texture and interest wherever it is grown. It even displays striking pink-red flowers in late summer, which are loved by pollinators. Growing to just 4 to 6 inches high, it can spread up to 18 inches and has a multitude of uses.
Unlike some other stonecrops, this sedum does not flop or fall open during the growing season. As a drought- and heat-tolerant perennial, SunSparkler® Firecracker Stonecrop is incredibly low maintenance and actually thrives on a bit of neglect. With its low form, this sedum is ideal for edging, adding to borders and rock gardens, and even growing in a container.
SunSparkler® Firecracker Stonecrop Sedum Care
For this sedum to flourish, it needs to be grown in full sun and in well-drained soil. It is considered drought tolerant, but only once established and will benefit from regular watering for the first season at least. With its ability to tolerate poor soils, this stonecrop does not require any extra fertilization. However, an annual mulch of organic matter in spring will give it a boost if needed. Being cold hardy, it is suitable for growing in zones 4 through 9.
Once the flowers have faded, they can be removed or left to provide some winter interest and food for the birds. To keep this perennial to shape, its new growth in spring can be pinched back. It is best divided in spring.
SunSparkler® Firecracker Stonecrop Sedum Spacing
Over time, SunSparkler® Firecracker Stonecrop can grow to 6 inches high by 15-18 inches wide. When growing this sedum en masse for swathes of color, it can be spaced around 18 inches apart.
