The Invincibelle® Spirit II Hydrangea by Proven Winners ColorChoice® is one of our favorite plants. This smooth hydrangea has beautiful flowers that cover this shrub from early summer to late fall. The flowers are white to start, and change to pink then dark red by the end of the growing season. Unlike other hydrangea arborescens, this plant has really strong stems that hold the enormous blooms upright all year. The shrub is also reblooming, and will continue to produce throughout the growing season.
One other great benefit of this shrub, is that a portion of the profits made from this plant are donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation to help find a cure for breast cancer. Since 2009, $1 for every plant sold is donated. The total amount is over a million dollars donated to help with research!
This bush is native to North America, and very easy to care for. So even people with limited gardening experience can plant this shrub and enjoy the beautiful flowers every year, without fail.
Invincibelle Spirit II Hydrangea Care
It is extremely easy to grow Invincibelle Spirit II hydrangeas. Plant these shrubs in an area that gets at least 4 hours of sunlight. In colder climates it can tolerate even more sunlight. In warmer climates it is best to be in a location that gets some afternoon shade during hot summer days. The direct sunlight helps the plant grow vibrant flowers and sturdy stems. This bush will bloom every year regardless of how harsh the winter is!
These require well-drained soil to help prevent root rot or “soggy feet”. However, this plant is native to North America and can tolerate harsh weather in winter and summer. We do recommend adding a layer of mulch around the plant to help protect shallow roots in winter and retain moisture in the summer.
Prune the Invincibelle Spirit II Hydrangea in early spring before new growth starts to emerge. This is not a “must”, but it does encourage new growth of flowers, help maintain a more attractive shape of the shrub, and help the plant grow stronger stems. You can also deadhead the old flowers to get the plant to rebloom sooner than it typically will.
Fertilize in late winter or early spring before new growth starts to emerge, and before you prune. Apply a controlled release fertilizer that is at most common local stores, designed for woody plants such as roses. Apply as directed on the package.
Invincibelle Spirit II Hydrangea Spacing
Space these shrubs 3 to 4 feet apart, center on center. If you choose to grow this into a beautiful flowering hedge, you can plant 28 to 36 inches apart, center on center. These are also great in garden planters. Use same spacing regulations if you choose to use more than 1 bush per container. It will need to be a very large container to use more than 1 shrub.
