An Astounding Newer Hydrangea!
'Invincibelle Spirit' is the first pink arborescens to be made available to the public.
The best known and most widely grown Hydrangea arborescens is the spectacular, white-flowering 'Annabelle'. Until now, all arborescens have been white.
For years scientists have worked to develop a pink Annabelle. The result is 'Invincibelle Spirit' which appeared in some garden centers in 2010. Horticulturists are already working on improving the pink arborescens and, at this time, may be ready to introduce some new varieties to the market.
Some say the blooms of this hydrangea are very pink. Others say the pink is more of a dusty color.
In some situations, the stems of 'Invincibelle Spirit' may not be very strong. Some have reported that the stems tend to bend and break easily, at least while plants are young. However, this remarkable hydrangea, which was developed by Dr. Tom Ranney at North Carolina State University's Mountain Horticultural Crops Research Station, is an exciting introduction since it is the very first pink arborescens. No doubt there will be many more pink arborescens to follow.
Tim Wood, Marketing Manager for Spring Meadow, reports that 'Invincibelle Spirit' "is very hardy, blooms on new wood (which means that flowering is very reliable), and flowers from early summer until frost".
