Invincibelle Hydrangeas
Native Smooth Hydrangeas. A Whole New Color Range.
Invincibelle® Hydrangeas build on North American native Hydrangea arborescens with stronger stems, compact sizes, repeat flowering, and colors that range from white and green to mauve, pink, ruby, and purple. They bloom on new wood, making them dependable choices even after cold winters.

Smooth Hydrangeas Have Moved Far Beyond White
Invincibelle® Hydrangeas take the cold hardiness and dependable flowering of Hydrangea arborescens and add stronger stems, reblooming performance, compact habits, and an expanded color palette. The collection now includes white, lime green, deep green, pink, mauve, ruby, and plum-purple flowers in sizes ranging from miniature shrubs to full landscape specimens.
Reliable New-Wood Blooms
Invincibelle® smooth hydrangeas flower on the current season's growth. Cold winters can damage stems without destroying the flower buds for the coming summer.
Most Selections Rebloom
Wee White 2.0, Sublime, Garnetta, Spirit II, Wee White, Mini Mauvette, Ruby, Limetta, and Spirit produce fresh flowers after their first flush. Invincibelle Lace is long blooming but is not classified as a rebloomer.
Sizes for More Spaces
The series includes compact shrubs around 2 feet tall, mid-sized border plants, and selections that reach 4 to 5 feet. Strong stems help support their substantial flower heads.
Compare Invincibelle® Hydrangeas
Choose by flower form, color, and mature size. Wee White selections fit the front of the border, Mini Mauvette and Garnetta bring color to compact spaces, and Lace offers a completely different lacecap look with greater pollinator value.

New Wood Takes the Guesswork Out of Blooming
Smooth hydrangeas form their flowers on new growth. That makes Invincibelle® extra reliable in cold climates, where winter can damage the old stems of other hydrangea types and remove their flower buds.
Many Invincibelle® selections also rebloom. Wee White 2.0, Sublime, Garnetta, Spirit II, Wee White, Mini Mauvette, Ruby, Limetta, and the original Spirit develop fresh flowers after their first flush, extending color through summer and, for many selections, into fall. Deadheading is not required to trigger those later flowers.
Flower color is genetically determined. Changing soil pH will not turn the flowers of this series another color.

How to Grow & Prune Invincibelle® Hydrangeas
Good light, steady moisture, and moderate spring pruning help these hydrangeas build the strongest stems and fullest flower display.
Give Them Enough Sun
Grow Invincibelle® Hydrangeas in part sun to full sun. More sun supports stronger stems and heavier flowering in cooler climates. Afternoon shade is useful in regions with intense summer heat.
Keep Moisture Consistent
Smooth hydrangeas prefer evenly moist soil but do not tolerate soggy roots. Water during dry periods and apply mulch to reduce moisture loss from their shallow root systems.
Drainage Matters More Than pH
These shrubs adapt to many soil types, including clay, as long as excess water can drain. Unlike bigleaf hydrangeas, changing the soil pH does not change Invincibelle® flower color.
Cut Back About One-Third
Prune in early spring as new growth begins. Shorten the entire shrub by about one-third its total height, cutting above healthy buds. Avoid cutting stems all the way to the ground because retaining a woody base helps build stronger stems.
Feed Once in Spring
Smooth hydrangeas are naturally fast growers. If growth is weak, one application of a granular slow-release rose or flowering-shrub fertilizer in early spring is generally sufficient.
Optional, Not Required
Spent flowers can remain for winter texture or be removed for appearance. Deadheading is not necessary to make reblooming Invincibelle® selections produce another round of flowers.
A Closer Look At Invincibelle Wee White®
Traditional smooth hydrangeas can become substantial shrubs. Invincibelle Wee White® changed that scale with a low, rounded habit small enough for the front of beds, compact foundation plantings, and large containers.
Invincibelle® Wee White 2.0 builds on the idea with a 2 to 2.5-foot habit. It also offers heavier flowering, crisp white blooms that age green, and stout stems that keep the flower heads upright.
Cultivars of a North American Native Hydrangea
Invincibelle® plants are cultivated forms of Hydrangea arborescens, a smooth hydrangea native across much of the eastern and central United States. They retain the species' cold hardiness and adaptability but have been selected for ornamental traits such as larger flowers, stronger stems, repeat blooming, and new colors.
For gardeners placing pollinator value high on the list, Invincibelle Lace deserves special attention. Its plum-purple lacecap flowers expose fertile florets that provide pollen for visiting insects. Dense mophead selections are grown primarily for their ornamental flower display and do not offer the same level of access.
Pair Invincibelle® with other regionally appropriate native shrubs and perennials to build a layered planting with flowers, shelter, and seasonal structure.
Where to Plant Invincibelle® Hydrangeas
The range of sizes makes this series unusually flexible. Use compact selections near the front of a bed and larger varieties as structural flowering shrubs.
Borders & Low Hedges
Repeat Invincibelle Limetta for a long flowering white ribbon. For a low hedge, compact varieties like Mini Mauvette, Garnetta, Ruby, and Wee White selections work especially well.
Foundation Plantings
New-wood flowering makes Invincibelle® Ruby and other selections dependable near the house in cold climates. Choose the mature size carefully so windows and walkways remain open as the shrubs fill out.
Mass Plantings
A repeated block of Invincibelle Spirit II magnifies the flower color and gives the planting more visual weight. Compact selections can create a low flowering drift without developing into a tall screen.
Mixed Shrub & Perennial Beds
Combine the rounded flower clusters with finer-textured grasses, perennials, and foliage plants. Green-flowered Limetta and the deep mauve of Mini Mauvette combine easily in mixed color schemes.
Invincibelle® Spirit Helped Change Smooth Hydrangeas
The original Invincibelle Spirit was the breakthrough that introduced pink to smooth hydrangeas. Spirit II followed with darker foliage, stiffer stems, larger flowers, and a deeper pink color that ages green.
The plants are also connected to breast cancer research. Proven Winners donates $1 from each Invincibelle® Spirit II hydrangea sold to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation®.
For gardeners, Spirit II has several practical advantages: 3.5 to 4-foot size, reblooming flowers from summer into fall, and the cold-climate reliability of a new-wood bloomer.

Invincibelle® Hydrangea FAQs
What type of hydrangea is Invincibelle?
Invincibelle® Hydrangeas are smooth hydrangeas derived from Hydrangea arborescens, a species native to North America. They are deciduous flowering shrubs known for cold hardiness and dependable new-wood flowering.
Do Invincibelle hydrangeas bloom on new or old wood?
Invincibelle® Hydrangeas bloom on new wood. Their flower buds develop on growth produced during the current season, so winter damage to old stems does not eliminate the coming summer's flowers.
When should you prune Invincibelle hydrangeas?
Early spring is the preferred time to prune Invincibelle® Hydrangeas. Wait until the plant is beginning to wake up, then remove damaged wood and shorten the remaining stems before strong new growth gets underway.
How do you prune an Invincibelle hydrangea?
Cut the entire shrub back by about one-third of its total height in early spring. Make cuts just above healthy buds and remove thin, weak, or dead branches. Smooth hydrangeas can survive harder pruning, but routinely cutting them to the ground can reduce the woody base that helps support strong stems.
Will soil pH change the color of an Invincibelle hydrangea?
No. Invincibelle® flower color does not shift from pink to blue based on soil pH. The white, green, mauve, pink, ruby, and purple colors are determined by the cultivar.
How much sun do Invincibelle hydrangeas need?
Grow them in part sun to full sun. More sunlight generally produces stronger stems and better flowering in cool climates. In hot regions, morning sun with afternoon shade helps reduce heat and moisture stress.
Do Invincibelle hydrangeas need deadheading?
No. Deadheading is not required for repeat flowering. Remove faded flower heads only when you prefer a cleaner appearance, or leave them in place for dried winter texture.
Are Invincibelle hydrangeas native plants?
Invincibelle® Hydrangeas are cultivated selections of North American native Hydrangea arborescens. They are commonly described as native cultivars or nativars rather than wild-type native plants.
Which Invincibelle hydrangea is best for pollinators?
Invincibelle Lace is the strongest choice in this series when pollinator access is a priority. Its open lacecap flower form exposes fertile florets that provide pollen. Dense mophead cultivars are valued primarily for their large ornamental flower clusters.
Are Invincibelle hydrangeas deer resistant?
No. Smooth hydrangeas can be heavily browsed by deer, including developing flower buds and foliage. Protect plants with fencing, netting, or a regularly reapplied deer repellent where browsing pressure is high.
What is the smallest Invincibelle hydrangea?
The original Invincibelle Wee White® can stay as short as about 1 foot and mature around 1 to 2.5 feet tall and wide. Wee White 2.0 grows about 2 to 2.5 feet tall and wide and offers heavier flowering on very sturdy stems.
What is the difference between Invincibelle Wee White and Wee White 2.0?
Wee White 2.0 is an improved version of the original Wee White. It matures around 2 to 2.5 feet tall and wide, produces abundant crisp white flowers that age green, and was selected for very strong stems and heavier flowering.
What is the difference between Invincibelle Spirit and Spirit II?
The original Invincibelle Spirit introduced the first pink smooth hydrangea. Spirit II improves on it with darker foliage, stiffer stems, larger flowers, and a deeper pink color that ages to green. Spirit II also reblooms through summer and fall.
