Growing Jasmine
Jasmine is known for its lovely, fragrant flowers, and while the blooms are stunning, this fast-growing perennial has a lot more to offer. The glossy, ovate foliage can be solid green or variegated, and some plants are evergreen while others are deciduous. The star-shaped flowers can be white, pink, or golden yellow and bloom in the spring. The blooms have a sweet, fruity scent.
Jasmine can have a shrub or vine growth habit, so select the variety that best fits your space. Jasmine grows in zones 7 through 11, depending on the variety.
Planting Jasmine
Choose a planting location that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight. Jasmine needs full to partial sun, but expect more prolific growth and blooming in increased sunlight. Plant it in rich, loamy soil that promotes drainage and is neutral to slightly alkaline.
Watering Jasmine
Jasmine plants prefer even moisture, so water regularly, depending on rainfall. Keep the soil damp but never soggy. Be prepared to water more often during a drought or dry period. Spread a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture in the soil.
Fertilizing Jasmine
Landscape Jasmine plants benefit from a fertilizer application each spring. Use a balanced, slow-release formula. Container-grown plants require more frequent fertilization. Apply a water-soluble fertilizer to containers every two weeks during the growing season.
Pruning Jasmine
Jasmine is a vigorous grower, and regular pruning keeps the plant neat and manageable while encouraging a full and dense form. Prune Jasmine when flowering is complete. Remove overgrowth and give the plant a rejuvenating trim to promote more growth. Remove damaged or dead growth at any time.
Caring For Jasmine in Pots
Jasmine grows well in a container, making it possible to enjoy the beautiful and fragrant spring flowers on a deck or balcony. Select a container with drainage holes and use a rich, well-drained potting mix. Position the pot in full sun to partial shade and water when the top few inches of the potting mix are dry. Plants in full sun will need water more often.
Winter Care For Jasmine
Jasmine grown outdoors requires protection in areas that may experience cold temperatures. In these climates, wrap the plant in landscape fabric and spread a thick layer of mulch over the roots. In climates with very cold winters, the plant may behave as an annual, or it can be transitioned indoors for the winter. Houseplant Jasmine needs a heavy pruning before moving indoors. Place the plant in bright, indirect sunlight and water when the top few inches of potting mix are dry.
