Hellebores like the FrostKiss™ Bayli’s Blush are welcome heralds of spring and excellent additions to woodland plantings. The flowers that bloom from late winter into early spring are creamy white with a lavender-pink blush. Unlike other hellebores, otherwise known as lenten roses, this cultivar has blooms that face outward rather than nod. It is also larger than other cultivars and offers the foliage pattern of the FrostKiss™ family of hellebores, so the leaves are attractively marbled with white. Bayli’s Blush is known scientifically as Helleborus x iburgensis ‘Bayli’s Blush’ and is a sterile hybrid, so it will not self-seed and overtake areas of the spring garden.
Resistant to deer, rabbits, and voles, this hellebore grows well in full or partial shade. It is an excellent option for shade gardens or growing around slow-to-leaf-out deciduous shrubs and trees. The foliage is evergreen, so it offers year-round interest. Incorporate this hellebore into woodland plantings with other shade lovers like ferns, hostas, and pulmonaria or use it in a shady border.
FrostKiss™ Bayli’s Blush Hellebore Care
The FrostKiss™ Bayli’s Blush hellebore performs best in partial shade. It is drought tolerant once established but benefits from watering during extended dry spells. The ideal soil for this plant is evenly moist and well drained with plenty of compost worked in at planting and organic mulch added over the root zone. A soil pH near neutral allows the maximum uptake of soil nutrients. Fertilize this hellebore lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer.
Cut the spent foliage back to ground level in early winter before the flowers appear. Remove the old flowers at the base of the stem when the blooms have finished. Remove dying, diseased or damaged foliage as it is noticed.
FrostKiss™ Bayli’s Blush Hellebore Spacing
This hellebore grows 18 to 24 inches tall with a spread of 26 to 30 inches. Space the hellebore 26 inches away from other plants to ensure adequate airflow.
