With its late winter blooms, FrostKiss™ Dorothy's Dawn Hellebore is ideal for adding some color and interest to a shaded spot. Producing large, pink flowers from February onwards, this is one of the latest flowering hellebores. What’s more, its evergreen foliage has a marbled effect and is attractive in its own right. Perfect for woodland planting, it will naturalize slowly over time.
Growing to around two feet tall, this hellebore can be used as a stunning groundcover when planted en masse. However, being compact, it can look equally stunning when grown in a container. Once established, it is low maintenance and needs little ongoing care. Native to mountainous regions of Asia and Europe, hellebores are tough and cold hardy.
FrostKiss™ Dorothy's Dawn Hellebore Care
For FrostKiss™ Dorothy's Dawn Hellebore to thrive, it needs to be planted in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Happiest in dappled or full shade, this perennial is ideal for growing in a border gently shaded by a canopy. Able to tolerate either slightly acidic or alkaline soils, the key thing this plant requires is moisture. Frequent watering is necessary to help this plant become established, after which watering is generally only required during prolonged hot and dry periods. When grown in a border, fertilizing is not strictly necessary; however, those grown in pots will benefit from a potassium-rich feed.
Being low maintenance, minimal pruning is required; simply remove any damaged or old-looking foliage at the base of the stem when the flowers appear. If grown in a pot or container, frequent watering during the summer months is required to prevent the soil from completely drying out.
FrostKiss™ Dorothy's Dawn Hellebore Spacing
Growing to an eventual height and spread of 20-24 inches, the FrostKiss™ Dorothy's Dawn Hellebore is a delightfully compact cultivar. When planted en masse, it can be spaced at a distance of around two feet apart.
