Frostkiss® Elemental® Lenten Rose displays marbled evergreen foliage and two-toned pink flowers when most shade gardens still feel half asleep. Helleborus x hybridus 'Elemental' forms a compact clump about 12 to 18 inches tall and wide, offering late-winter to early-spring bloom without needing much room. Compared with older hellebores that are grown mostly for flowers alone, this one keeps handsome foliage in view through the rest of the year and brings a more polished look to shaded beds and containers.
This evergreen perennial is part of the Frostkiss® series, bred for long bloom, strong foliage patterning, and dependable garden performance. The flowers open in pink with deeper magenta edging and hold well over the clump. The leathery leaves keep structure long after the bloom season and are passed over by deer and rabbits. Once established it handles summer dry spells better than many shade perennials, though it still looks best with even moisture. Use it to anchor a woodland border, brighten the front of a shaded foundation bed, or coalesce a mixed shade planting through repetition of the marbled foliage.
Frostkiss® Elemental® Lenten Rose Care
Plant in partial shade to full shade, or in spots with morning sun and protection from hot afternoon exposure. Frostkiss® Elemental® Lenten Rose grows best in rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Good drainage is especially important in winter, since saturated soil can weaken the crown.
Water regularly during the first growing season, especially when the top few inches of soil begin to dry. After it settles in, this hellebore is fairly drought tolerant, but plants hold foliage better through summer when the soil does not stay dry for long stretches. Feed in early spring with compost or a balanced slow-release fertilizer, and leave the plant in place once established because hellebores prefer not to be moved often.
Cut away tattered old leaves in late winter before the new flowers and fresh foliage rise, which keeps the blooms visible and helps the clump look cleaner. Remove spent flower stems after bloom if you want a tidier finish, or leave them a bit longer if you enjoy watching the seed heads develop. In colder areas, a light mulch of shredded leaves can help buffer winter soil swings, but keep mulch off the crown itself.
Frostkiss® Elemental® Lenten Rose Spacing
Space plants 16 to 18 inches apart so each clump has room to mature and show off both flowers and foliage. For containers, use a pot at least 14 to 16 inches wide with rich mix and sharp drainage, and keep the planting shaded from strong afternoon sun.
In the landscape, pair Frostkiss® Elemental® Lenten Rose with ferns and lungwort for a layered woodland planting that keeps texture moving after bloom. In containers, combine it with coral bells and pansies for an early-season display with foliage contrast and color at the rim.
