Sombrero® Mandarin Mambo Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea 'Balsomambo') lights up the garden with bold orange petals from early summer through fall. Its compact habit, reaching about 18 to 22 inches tall, fits neatly in smaller spaces. The glowing flower cones add a punch of lasting color. It stands out among other coneflowers with a reliable bloom cycle and robust, upright stems.
This North American native resists common pests and tolerates dry conditions once established. Deer often pass it by, and the minimal upkeep appeals to busy gardeners. Use it in pollinator beds, mass plantings, mixed borders, or containers near patios. Fragrant blooms also make great cut flowers to bring indoors.
Sombrero® Mandarin Mambo Coneflower Care
Plant in full sun where the soil drains well, and ensure at least six hours of daily light. Water regularly until roots settle, then reduce frequency, though occasional deep watering in hot spells supports better performance. Provide a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring, and maintain a pH near 6.0 to 7.0. Adding organic matter or compost as mulch improves drainage and nutrient levels.
Deadheading encourages a steady display of fresh blooms, and light pinching in early summer can promote branching. Thin out stems if they become crowded, and shear lightly after peak flowering to keep an attractive shape. Trim off old growth in fall, or leave seedheads for winter interest and wildlife foraging. Containers benefit from a mulch layer and shelter in extreme cold.
Sombrero® Mandarin Mambo Coneflower Spacing
Space coneflowers 18 to 24 inches apart for mass plantings or groupings to allow ample air circulation. A solitary plant in a border needs about 18 inches of open space. Start with a container at least 12 inches across, and size up if you plan to combine it with other annuals or perennials.
