Echinacea x hybrida ‘Balsompred’ delivers deep red petals wrapped around a dark central cone, all on a dense 14–16 inch plant that holds its shape without flopping. It spreads about 14–16 inches wide, forming a uniform mound that looks deliberate in borders and polished in containers. Many red coneflowers stretch and open up by midsummer, but this selection remains tight and heavily branched. The result is a concentrated burst of color that doesn’t overwhelm smaller spaces.
Part of the Sombrero Poco™ line, Sombrero Poco™ Red Coneflower was bred for strong winter hardiness and reliable first-year flowering in Zones 4b–9b. Butterflies and bees flock to the nectar-rich blooms through early and late summer, while deer typically leave it alone. Once established, it handles heat and brief dry periods with resilience. It’s equally effective massed in sunny borders or featured as a thriller in patio containers. We like using it where you want bold impact near the front of a bed without blocking what’s behind it.
Sombrero Poco™ Red Coneflower Care
Plant in full sun for the richest color and strongest stems. Choose soil that drains quickly after rain and falls within a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Set the crown level with the surrounding grade and press soil firmly around the roots. Provide steady moisture during the first growing season to encourage deep rooting, then water only when the soil becomes notably dry. Fertilizer is rarely necessary; if growth appears weak, apply a light, balanced feed in spring.
Remove spent flowers individually to promote additional buds along the stems. In autumn, leave a few seedheads for winter texture before cutting plants back to the base in early spring. Avoid heavy mulch directly over the crown. Divide mature clumps every few years if vigor declines.
Sombrero Poco™ Red Coneflower Spacing
Allow 16–18 inches between plants so each clump can branch fully. In containers, select a pot at least 12 inches across for a single plant, or larger for mixed designs. Pair with ornamental millet, coreopsis, and blanket flower for a sun-loving planting that layers red with warm seasonal tones.
