Sombrero Tres Amigos is a party in a plant – well, a lively trio at least – at any time multiple shades of reds and purples are strutting their stuff, from coral to red and magenta. This well-branched, long-blooming coneflower is just as easy-care and drought-resistant as its siblings, and just as irresistible to bees and butterflies.
Part of the flower-packed, well-branched Sombrero series of hybrids of our native echinacea, compact Tres Amigos fits into any border or pot at only 18 inches high by 24 inches wide. Deadheading or cutting long-lasting bouquets will bring on more and more flowers. This echinacea will be a burst of summer color for sunny, dry areas including slopes, parking strips, pollinator gardens, patios, and cutting gardens. In short (no offense, Amigos), any sunny spot where easy, bright color is wanted.
Sombrero® Tres Amigos Coneflower Care
Coneflowers want all the sunshine, at least six hours of direct sun per day, and excellent drainage in the soil. They are drought tolerant once established but will need regular watering the first few summers at your home. Echinaceas prefer a leaner soil without a lot of fertilizer. In spring, sprinkle in some compost or a little aged cow manure, or possibly some slow-release fertilizer.
Deadheading fosters repeat blooms but stop cutting in September to allow some seed heads to stay for local birds. Also, in areas with mild wet winters, it’s recommended to plant before August, to leave stems intact in the fall and mulch with gravel to repel excess water.
Sombrero® Tres Amigos Coneflower Spacing
The ideal space between Tres Amigos coneflowers is 22 to 24 inches. This will allow enough root space and air circulation between the plants.
