Prepare to be bowled over by this astounding daylily. ‘King of the Ages’ is aptly named with its regal height, enormous flowers, and magnificent coloring. It has 38-inch-tall scapes and large, 6.5-inch flowers. The fragrant blooms are a breathtaking fusion of buttery yellow, peach, and apricot with a burgundy eye and ruffled, burgundy edge. A repeat bloomer, it will bring color to your garden in mid-summer and again later in the season. Expect high performance from this tough, adaptable, award winner.
Rainbow Rhythm® 'King of the Ages' Hemerocallis resists leaf spot, root rot, and powdery mildew. It tolerates harsh conditions such as city pollution, juglone from black walnut trees, poor soils, and salt. It repels rabbits. This daylily grows well in pots, taking the role of thriller in a combination container. Use it in mass plantings or try pairing it with compact shrubs or ornamental grasses in the landscape. As an accent plant, it makes a fine specimen or focal point in the border.
Rainbow Rhythm® King of the Ages Daylily Care
Plant this easy-care daylily in well-drained soil and in a full-sun location. Incorporate organic matter for aeration, drainage, and fertility. Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and be sure the crown of the plant is even with the soil level. Water thoroughly, then provide regular irrigation for optimum growth. 'King of the Ages' tolerates any type of soil and pH.
Cut back spent flower stems after flowering. No specific winter care is recommended as 'King of the Ages' has complete winter hardiness in northern zones. When growing them in containers, plant in a rich, soilless potting mix. If you are using a light-weight pot, you may want to place 2-3 inches of river rocks in the bottom first – this will prevent them blowing over when the plants are full grown. Water slowly until water comes out of the hole before placing the pot on a drip tray. Locate in full sun – at least six hours each day. Protect containers in the winter by placing them in an unheated garage or basement until they produce new shoots in the spring.
Rainbow Rhythm® King of the Ages Daylily Spacing
In the garden, space the plants 18-24 inches apart, from center plant to center. If planting in containers, large pots are best. They should be at least 24 inches in diameter.
