How To Use Mandevilla In The Garden

Mandevilla is a tropical vine sporting clusters of bold, trumpet-like flowers from late spring until fall. This evergreen vine can reach up to 10 feet in height, making it an excellent choice for adding vertical interest to gardens. It handles humidity with ease, thriving on sunny patios and archways where its glossy leaves can climb freely. Each elongated bloom is perfectly shaped to invite pollinators, adding an ever-present energy around its twining stems.

In a mixed border, let the vine ascend a fence or pergola, turning a plain backdrop into something striking. When grown in a roomy container, it personalizes decks or balconies with continuous bursts of color. Train the stems on a trellis or obelisk, where the cascading foliage contributes a soft contrast among rigid supports. Combine it with subtle grasses or companion shrubs so its tropical blooms remain the star of the planting scheme.

Mandevilla Care

Mandevilla plants require rich, moist, well-drained soil with a neutral to acidic pH. Position them in a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily, while protecting them from intense afternoon sun. Water the plants when the top inch of soil feels dry. Incorporate organic compost into the soil and apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every couple of weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth and abundant blooms.

Trim the vines back by no more than one-third in the fall or early spring before new growth emerges, and remove dead or damaged growth as needed. In regions with cold winters, cut back all growth in the fall and consider moving potted Mandevilla plants to a protected area during the winter months to prevent frost damage. Potted Mandevilla needs adequate drainage, regular watering, and application of a water-soluble fertilizer every couple of weeks to promote vigorous growth and flowering.
