Orange Double Begonia Bulbs bring warm orange color to shaded spaces that often get overlooked in summer. Begonia 'Double Orange' produces full, layered flowers that can reach up to 4 inches across on compact plants about 8 to 14 inches tall. The blooms continue from summer until frost, making them especially useful for covered porches, shaded containers, and protected border edges. We like this color in deep shade because it gives the planting a warmer look than white or pink begonias.
This tuberous-style begonia is valued for large double flowers and steady performance in partial shade to full shade. It is hardy in zones 8 to 10, while gardeners in colder zones can grow it as a summer bulb and store the tubers indoors for winter. The flowers attract hummingbirds and other pollinators, and deer usually leave the plants alone. Use Orange Double Begonia Bulbs in patio pots, window boxes, shaded entry beds, and mixed containers where bold flower form is needed without direct sun.
Orange Double Begonia Bulbs Care
Plant Orange Double Begonia Bulbs in partial shade to full shade, with bright indirect light giving the best flower display. Use rich, well-drained soil or a loose potting mix that holds light moisture without staying wet. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, about 5.5 to 6.8, supports healthy root and tuber growth.
Start tubers indoors in late winter or early spring for earlier flowering, placing the hollow side up just below the soil surface. Water sparingly until shoots appear, then keep the soil evenly moist while allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Feed during active growth with a balanced slow-release fertilizer at planting, or use a liquid fertilizer monthly through summer. Keep plants sheltered from strong wind and hard afternoon sun.
Remove wilted flowers and tired leaves through the season to keep plants clean and blooming well. Pinch back stretched stems if the plant becomes open in the center. In cold zones, reduce watering in fall, lift or store the tubers before freezing temperatures, and keep them in dry peat moss, vermiculite, or sawdust in a cool frost-free place.
Orange Double Begonia Bulbs Spacing
Plant Orange Double Begonia Bulbs 1 to 2 inches deep and space them 9 to 12 inches apart. For containers, use one tuber in a 10- to 12-inch pot, or plant several in a wider bowl or window box with drainage holes. Container soil should stay lightly moist during active growth, but the pot should never sit in standing water.
For container companions, pair Orange Double Begonia Bulbs with coleus, fuchsia, or wishbone flowers for shade-tolerant color and contrasting foliage. Bacopa can trail over the pot edge while staying low enough to keep the begonia flowers visible. In garden beds, hostas and ferns make strong leafy companions, while ajuga can fill the front edge of a shaded planting without competing for height.
