Red Double Begonia Bulbs give shaded spaces the deep red flower color that usually belongs to sunny annual beds. Begonia 'Double Red' grows about 8 to 14 inches tall, with layered blooms that can reach up to 4 inches across. The rose-like flowers stand out against green foliage from summer until frost, especially in containers, porch planters, and shaded border edges. Try this begonia where afternoon sun is too strong for other summer flowers but a bold color accent is still needed.

This tuberous begonia is grown for large double flowers and dependable shade performance. It is hardy outdoors in zones 8 to 10, while gardeners in colder zones can grow it as a warm-season bulb and store the tubers through winter. Deer usually avoid begonias, and the compact habit makes them practical for patios, balconies, window boxes, and tucked-in shade pockets. Use Red Double Begonia Bulbs in shaded containers, under covered entries, along protected walkways, or in mixed beds with leafy plants that appreciate steady moisture.

Red Double Begonia Bulbs Care

Plant Red Double Begonia Bulbs in partial shade to full shade, with bright indirect light preferred over direct afternoon sun. Use rich, well-drained soil or potting mix that holds light moisture without staying wet. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, about 5.5 to 6.8, supports healthy tuber and flower development.

Start tubers indoors in late winter or early spring for earlier blooms, setting the concave side up just below the soil surface. Water sparingly until growth appears, then keep the soil evenly moist while letting the top layer dry slightly between waterings. Feed once a month during active growth with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer. Avoid splashing the leaves late in the day, since shaded foliage dries more slowly.

Remove faded blooms and yellowing leaves to keep plants clean through the season. Pinch lanky stems if needed to encourage a fuller shape. In colder zones, reduce watering in fall, allow the tops to die back, then store cured tubers in dry peat moss, vermiculite, or sawdust in a cool frost-free place.

Red Double Begonia Bulbs Spacing

Plant Red Double Begonia Bulbs 1 to 2 inches deep and space them 9 to 12 inches apart. For containers, use one tuber in a 10- to 12-inch pot, or group several in a wider planter with drainage holes. Keep containers protected from hard rain, and water when the upper soil begins to dry.

For container companions, pair Red Double Begonia Bulbs with impatiens, bacopa, or sweet potato vines for layered shade color and trailing growth around the pot edge. In garden beds, coral bells give foliage contrast without competing with the double flowers. Ajuga and dead nettle can cover the front of a shaded planting, while elephant ears add larger leaves behind the begonias for a fuller tropical effect.
