Deutschland Dahlia Bulbs deliver saturated red flowers with huge visual impact. Dahlia pinnata 'Deutschland' produces 6- to 8-inch formal decorative blooms on plants that typically reach 3 to 4 feet tall. The rounded petals give each flower a full, finished shape that looks especially strong in cutting gardens. If you are looking for red flowers with presence, this is the one to get.

This late-summer bloomer keeps the garden active when many earlier flowers are past their peak. Tall stems make Deutschland useful in the back half of a sunny border, where the flowers can rise above lower annuals and perennials. The large blooms are excellent for bouquets, though staking is helpful because big flowers can catch wind after rain. Deer tend to pass dahlias by, and the tubers can be lifted in cold climates for planting again next spring.

Deutschland Dahlia Bulbs Care

Plant Deutschland Dahlia Bulbs in full sun, or provide light afternoon shade in very hot regions. Dahlias prefer fertile, well-drained soil with steady organic matter and a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0. Avoid heavy, wet spots where tubers may sit cold and damp before growth begins.

Water after planting, then hold off on frequent watering until shoots appear above the soil. Once the plant is growing, soak the root zone deeply when the top few inches of soil dry, especially as buds begin to form. Feed with a low-nitrogen flower fertilizer after growth is underway, since too much nitrogen can favor leaves over blooms. Mulch lightly after the soil warms to help keep moisture even without covering the crown too deeply.

Deadhead spent flowers often, cutting stems back to a leaf joint to encourage more buds. Pinch young plants when they have several sets of leaves for a bushier habit, or remove side buds when fewer, larger blooms are preferred. In zones 7 and colder, dig tubers after frost blackens the foliage, dry them briefly, and store them cool, dark, and frost-free.

Deutschland Dahlia Bulbs Spacing

Space Deutschland Dahlia Bulbs 12 to 18 inches apart in garden beds, giving wider spacing where airflow is limited. Plant tubers 1 to 2 inches deep according to the supplied product guidance, with the growing eye facing upward. For containers, use at least a 14- to 16-inch-wide pot with drainage holes, and plan on staking early before stems carry heavy flowers. Container-grown dahlias dry faster than in-ground plants, so check soil moisture more often once summer heat builds.

Companion Planting

For containers, pair Deutschland with alyssum, sweet potato vines, and salvia to cover the pot edge, trail over the rim, and echo the upright habit without crowding the dahlia crown. In garden beds, zinnias make excellent cutting partners, and yarrow adds flat-topped texture that contrasts the rounded dahlia blooms. Switchgrass is a strong landscape companion behind or beside the planting because its narrow foliage supports the late-season look without competing for flower shape.
