Jester Gladiolus Bulbs turn summer borders into a bold cut-flower display with yellow blooms splashed in red at the center. Gladiolus 'Jester' grows from spring-planted corms, sending up upright flower spikes that usually reach 40 to 48 inches tall. Each stem carries a line of ruffled florets that open from the bottom upward, giving the garden a longer show than a single flush. This variety is spectacular in cutting rows because the two-tone flowers enliven simple bouquets without needing many stems.

This gladiolus is best grown in full sun, where the stems are stronger and the flower color develops cleanly. It blooms in mid to late summer, roughly 60 to 90 days after planting depending on weather and planting time. Gladiolus are perennial in zones 8 to 10, while colder-zone gardeners can lift the corms before winter or treat them as seasonal summer color. Use Jester Gladiolus Bulbs in cut flower gardens, sunny borders, cottage plantings, and narrow spaces between perennials where vertical bloom is needed.

Jester Gladiolus Bulbs Care

Plant Jester Gladiolus Bulbs in full sun with 6 to 8 hours of direct light each day. Use rich, well-drained soil, including loam, sandy soil, or improved clay that does not stay wet. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, about 6.0 to 7.0, supports healthy root and flower development.

Water thoroughly after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist once growth begins. Deep watering during dry periods is better than frequent shallow watering, especially as buds form. Feed lightly when flower spikes begin to develop, using a bloom-supporting fertilizer according to the label. In zones 3 to 7, lift corms after frost and store them in a cool, dry, frost-free place for replanting in spring.

Cut stems when the lowest florets begin to open, leaving several leaves on the plant to feed the corm. Remove spent flower stalks after bloom if not harvested. Tall stems may need staking, especially in wind or in very rich soil where growth becomes heavier.

Jester Gladiolus Bulbs Spacing

Plant Jester Gladiolus Bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart, with the pointed end facing up. For a longer bloom window, plant a small batch every 1 to 2 weeks from spring into early summer. In containers, use a deep pot at least 14 to 16 inches wide with drainage holes, and place it where wind will not tip the flower spikes.

For container companions, pair Jester Gladiolus Bulbs with marigold, cuphea, or calibrachoa for full-sun color around the lower stems. In landscape beds, zinnia and salvia match the sunny, cutting-garden style and keep flowers coming around the gladiolus spikes. Dahlias make strong nearby partners for later summer bouquets, while switchgrass gives upright foliage support without covering the blooms.
