Miss Saigon Hyacinth Bulbs open with dark grape-purple flower spikes and a fragrance that can fill a spring entryway. Hyacinthus orientalis 'Miss Saigon' produces dense, upright clusters of tubular florets with slightly paler edges and a cool blue cast on the petal backs. The 8- to 12-inch height makes it easy to use at the front of beds, in window boxes, or in grouped patio containers. We prefer it near walkways because the color is dramatic at eye level and the scent is easy to catch as you pass.
This award-winning Dutch hyacinth blooms in early to mid-spring and is well suited to cold-winter gardens. The compact flower spikes sit above short, sword-like green foliage and are useful for cutting, forcing, and clustered outdoor displays. Hyacinths are deer resistant and often avoided by rodents, which helps them hold their place in spring bulb plantings. Plant Miss Saigon Hyacinth Bulbs in drifts, along evergreen edges, beside mid-spring daffodils, or in containers that need rich color early in the season.
Miss Saigon Hyacinth Bulbs Care
Plant Miss Saigon Hyacinth Bulbs in full sun to partial shade, with full sun promoting the densest flower spikes. Use well-drained soil with organic matter worked through the bed, especially if the site is heavy clay or loose sand. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, about 6.0 to 7.0, supports strong rooting and healthy spring growth.
Water thoroughly after fall planting so soil settles around the bulbs. During spring growth, keep the soil moderately moist until the foliage yellows and the bulbs enter dormancy. Feed at planting with a bulb fertilizer top-dressed or mixed into the surrounding soil, keeping fertilizer away from direct contact with the bulbs. Add a light winter mulch after the ground cools in colder regions, then loosen it in spring as shoots appear.
Wear gloves when handling hyacinth bulbs, since the papery skins can irritate some people. Remove faded flower spikes after bloom, but leave the leaves until they yellow and release easily. For indoor forcing, chill bulbs first, then move them into bright light once growth is ready to stretch.
Miss Saigon Hyacinth Bulbs Spacing
Plant Miss Saigon Hyacinth Bulbs about 6 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart, with the pointed end facing up. For a fuller container display, set bulbs close together but not touching in a pot with drainage holes. Use a container at least 10 to 12 inches wide, and keep the pot evenly moist during active growth without letting it sit in water.
For containers, pair Miss Saigon Hyacinth Bulbs with primrose, dianthus, or lobelia for cool-season flowers that stay low around the upright spikes. In garden beds, irises make a good companion because their vertical foliage complements the hyacinth leaves and extends the spring display. Hellebores suit part-shade edges, while sea thrift works in sunnier, sharply drained spots after the hyacinths finish blooming.
