Orange Nugget Dahlia Bulbs bring compact summer color with rounded orange blooms carried on dark stems. Dahlia 'Orange Nugget' produces 3- to 4-inch ball-style flowers with tightly rolled petals that give each bloom a neat, sculpted form. Its shorter 20- to 30-inch habit makes it easier to use near the front of a border than taller dinnerplate types. This is a good one for gardeners who cut flowers often but still want the plant to look full in the bed.

This dahlia flowers from midsummer until frost, adding steady color after many spring and early-summer plants have finished. The clump-forming habit works well in patio pots, cutting gardens, cottage beds, and small sunny borders where taller dahlias may feel oversized. Orange Nugget is not winter hardy in cold climates, but the tubers store well when handled before hard freezes. Its bright orange flowers pair especially well with blue, purple, cream, and bronze plantings.

Orange Nugget Dahlia Bulbs Care

Plant Orange Nugget Dahlia Bulbs in full sun to partial shade, with strongest flowering in at least 6 hours of direct sun. Use fertile, well-drained soil with compost worked in before planting. Dahlias grow well in slightly acidic to neutral soil, roughly pH 6.2 to 7.0.

Set tubers out after frost danger has passed and the soil is warm, then water once to settle the planting area. Hold back on heavy watering until shoots appear, since dormant tubers can rot in cold, wet soil. Once growth is active, water deeply when the soil dries several inches down, and feed with a low-nitrogen flower fertilizer every few weeks during bud production. Mulch after the shoots are established to conserve moisture and keep soil temperature more even.

Pinch the growing tip when plants reach about 10 to 12 inches tall for a bushier shape and more flowering stems. Cut spent blooms back to a leaf joint to keep new buds developing rather than leaving bare stems. In zones 3 to 8, lift tubers after frost blackens the foliage, dry them for several days, and store them in a cool, frost-free place in barely moist peat moss, vermiculite, or wood shavings.

Orange Nugget Dahlia Bulbs Spacing

Space Orange Nugget Dahlia Bulbs 18 to 24 inches apart in garden beds, giving each plant enough air and room to branch. Plant tubers 3 to 4 inches deep with the eye facing up, then mark the spot so new shoots are not disturbed. For containers, use a pot at least 14 to 16 inches wide with drainage holes, and check moisture more often once the plant begins flowering.

Companion Planting

In containers, pair Orange Nugget Dahlia Bulbs with alyssum, lantana, or fan flower to trail and flower below the upright stems. In landscape beds, agastache is a strong partner because it handles sun and drainage while adding pollinator appeal beside the orange blooms. Russian sage and big bluestem make good background companions, giving the planting airy texture and cooler tones that keep the dahlia color from feeling heavy.
