Dahlia 'Orange Nugget' produces 3- to 4-inch ball-style flowers with tightly rolled petals that give each bloom a neat, sculpted form. Its shorter 20- to 30-inch habit makes it easier to use near the front of a border than taller dinnerplate types. This is a good one for gardeners who cut flowers often but still want the plant to look full in the bed.

This dahlia flowers from midsummer until frost, adding steady color after many spring and early-summer plants have finished. The clump-forming habit works well in patio pots, cutting gardens, cottage beds, and small sunny borders where taller dahlias may feel oversized. Orange Nugget is not winter hardy in cold climates, but the tubers store well when handled before hard freezes. Set tubers out after frost danger has passed and the soil is warm, then water once to settle the planting area. Hold back on heavy watering until shoots appear, since dormant tubers can rot in cold, wet soil. Once growth is active, water deeply when the soil dries several inches down, and feed with a low-nitrogen flower fertilizer every few weeks during bud production. Mulch after the shoots are established to conserve moisture and keep soil temperature more even.
