Fill shaded patios, window boxes, and garden edges with rose-like blooms all summer. Pink Double Begonia Bulbs produce full, layered pink blooms from summer into fall over attractive green foliage. The plants stay compact at about 8 to 14 inches tall and 9 to 12 inches wide, making them easy to use in containers, baskets, and border fronts. Our designers often use them in containers on covered porches and shaded patios where petunias and many sun annuals simply will not bloom well.
This spring-planted tuberous begonia is valued for long flowering and good performance in warm, humid summer weather. The double flowers can reach several inches across, giving small plantings a fuller look than single-flowered bedding begonias. They are especially useful for brightening north-facing entries, woodland edges, balcony planters, and low-light garden beds. In zones 8 to 10 they may overwinter outdoors with protection, while colder zones should treat them as tender bulbs that need fall lifting.
Pink Double Begonia Bulbs Care
Plant Pink Double Begonia Bulbs in partial shade to full shade, or in bright indirect light where they are protected from hot afternoon sun. Use rich, well-drained soil with good organic matter, or a high-quality potting mix for containers and hanging baskets. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is best, and drainage is important because wet tubers can rot.
Water when the upper soil layer begins to dry, keeping the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Feed during active growth with a slow-release fertilizer at planting or a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer according to label directions. These begonias enter dormancy when temperatures cool, and the foliage will decline after frost.
Remove faded blooms and yellowing leaves to keep the plant clean and encourage continued flowering. In zones 3 to 8, lift tubers before hard frost, cut stems back to about 1 to 2 inches, cure them for a couple of weeks, and store them dry in peat moss, vermiculite, or sawdust at about 40 to 50°F. Do not rinse stored tubers, since extra moisture can lead to mold.
Pink Double Begonia Bulbs Spacing
Plant Pink Double Begonia Bulbs 9 to 12 inches apart in beds, borders, and mass plantings. Use a 10- to 12-inch container for one tuber, or a wider planter with good drainage for grouped plantings. Combine them with ferns, impatiens, lobelia, or coleus in shaded containers and provide steady moisture, filtered light, and rich soil.
